Job description

CAF Rolling Stock, a global leader in the design, manufacture, and support of railway systems are looking for a highly driven Senior Quality Technician to join the busy Newport site. If you thrive in fast-paced environments and have a talent for motivating people, this could be your next big move.

This role is pivotal to overseeing the quality inspection of incoming goods used in the assembly of various Rolling Stock vehicles. Prior experience within the rail industry is a plus however it s not essential what matters most is the ability to lead, learn, and deliver results. With the business going through a growth period, they need someone who can hit the ground running and provide strong, visible leadership and proven quality inspection skills.

This role calls for someone who can offer steady leadership to a team of 2 quality inspectors, keeping the team aligned, and maintaining momentum. Strong communication skills, a supportive approach, and the ability to build trust and focus within the team will be important.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead inspections on goods received, ensuring alignment with specifications and project needs
  • Drive quality processes, including audits, FAI/FII documentation, and supplier coordination
  • Work closely with the Supplier and Production Quality Managers to meet operational targets
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performance team culture with your direct reports
  • Champion continuous improvement and support lean and quality initiatives across site
  • Coach and mentor the team, ensuring they develop while consistently delivering high standards
  • Communicate effectively across departments and with key stakeholders to resolve quality concerns.

The Candidate:

  • In-depth experience in a similar role within a quality-focused industry such as transportation, manufacturing, or aerospace
  • A qualification in a technical or quality-related discipline (minimum NVQ Level 3)
  • Proven experience managing or supervising a small team in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage across all levels
  • Strong IT proficiency, especially in Microsoft Office tools such as Excel
  • Proactive in identifying and solving problems, with a mindset rooted in continuous improvement
  • Familiar with problem-solving tools such as 8D, CAPA, SCRA, and 5-Why
  • Flexible and adaptable able to respond to changing priorities in a high-pressure setting

Desirable:

  • ISO 9001 Internal Auditor qualification
  • ILM or similar certification in Leadership/Management
  • Six Sigma Green Belt
  • Background in rolling stock, automotive, aerospace, or heavy engineering
