Job summary

SPT Labtech in Melbourn near Cambridge is seeking a Senior Quality Control Technician to own testing processes for consumables and liquid handling products. You will lead QC activities, implement new methods, and work closely with Development, Manufacturing Engineering and QARA teams to improve how quality is measured and delivered.

The role requires hands-on testing experience, strong attention to detail, and collaboration across departments to drive data-led improvements.

Qualifications

  • Experience in Quality, Engineering, or Manufacturing environments.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Practical experience in volumetric testing or other precision measurement techniques.
  • Structured problem-solving and RCA methodologies (5 Whys, Fishbone, 8D).
  • Experience monitoring, analysing, and reporting on quality KPIs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead by example in Health & Safety and ensure policy compliance.
  • Conduct in-process and final quality checks on consumables and products.
  • Manage and inspect incoming stock from a quality perspective.
  • Perform volumetric testing on liquid handling consumables for precision and reliability.
  • Develop and improve volumetric test methods and equipment.
  • Collaborate with Production, Development, Manufacturing Engineering and QA teams for RCA investigations and new QC methods.
  • Track and report global QC KPIs across sites, driving corrective actions.
  • Introduce and document testing and inspection techniques to enhance quality processes.
  • Support continuous improvement projects including new consumables and market transitions.
  • Check parts against specifications, drawings, and Certificates of Conformity (COCs).
  • Identify and manage non-conforming products.

SPT Labtech continues to grow and we’re looking for a Senior Quality Control Technician to join our team in Melbourn. In this hands-on role, you’ll ensure our consumables and liquid handling products meet the highest quality standards. You’ll take ownership of testing processes, help implement new QC methods, and work closely with our Development, Manufacturing Engineering and QARA teams to continuously improve how we measure and deliver quality.

Your key responsibilities will include:
  • Lead by example in Health & Safety and ensure compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Conduct in-process and final quality checks on consumables and products ready for dispatch.
  • Manage and inspect incoming stock from a quality perspective.
  • Perform volumetric testing on our liquid handling consumables- ensuring precision, repeatability, and reliability.
  • Develop and improve volumetric test methods and equipment for our liquid handling instruments, driving greater accuracy and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with Production, Development, Manufacturing Engineering and Quality Assurance Teams to lead root cause analysis (RCA) investigations using structured methodologies (e.g. 5 Whys, Fishbone/Ishikawa, 8D), resolve quality issues, and validate new QC methods.
  • Track, analyse, and report on global QC KPIs (e.g. first pass yield, defect and non-conformance rates, cost of poor quality) across sites, identifying trends and driving data-led corrective and preventive actions.
  • Introduce and document new testing and inspection techniques that enhance our quality processes.
  • Support continuous improvement projects and project involving working on new consumables or transitioning existing consumables into new markets, sharing insights and best practices across teams.
  • Check parts against specifications, drawings, and Certificates of Conformity (COCs).
  • Identify, label, and manage all non-conforming products appropriately.
About you and your skillset:
  • Experience in Quality, Engineering, or Manufacturing environments.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Practical experience in volumetric testing or other precision measurement techniques.
  • Confidence in structured problem-solving and root cause analysis (RCA), with practical experience applying methodologies such as 5 Whys, Fishbone/Ishikawa, or 8D.
  • Experience monitoring, analysing, and reporting on quality KPIs, using data to identify trends and drive continuous improvement.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work across departments.
  • Comfortable using Manufacturing Planning Systems, MS Word, and Excel.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 (experience with ISO 13485 or cGMP is a bonus).
  • You thrive in a team environment possessing a proactive, collaborative, and flexible approach.
Desirable but not essential:
  • Strong understanding and practical experience in statistics, including the application of statistical controls and analysis techniques such as control charts, capability analysis, and ongoing control monitoring to evaluate and ensure the quality, reliability, and consistency of consumable products.
