Senior QA Automation Engineer

Playwright – TypeScript – CI/CD

Initially 3 months with likely extensions

Remote – Once per month Meeting in Bristol

Unify is proud to be exclusively representing an exciting scale-up business looking to engage a Contract Senior QA Automation Engineer to accelerate their Test Automation journey.

This contract initially lasts 3 months, with a high likelihood of extension.

The role is remote, with an expectation of one in-person meeting per month in Bristol.

Overview

We seek an experienced QA Automation Engineer to help expand and improve our client's automated testing framework. This role focuses on building and maintaining robust test automation for an evolving platform, increasing coverage of core functionalities, and supporting long-term quality and reliability of releases.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Test Automation Development: Build and maintain end-to-end automated UI tests using Playwright (TypeScript). Improve and expand the existing test suite to cover regression and feature-level behaviour. Ensure test automation is integrated into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., via GitHub Actions). Refactor existing tests for reliability, maintainability, and clarity.
  2. Test Reliability & Integration: Collaborate with engineering to improve test stability in build pipelines. Diagnose and resolve test flakiness issues across staging and production environments.
  3. Quality & Test Governance: Maintain consistent test structure, naming, and performance benchmarks. Contribute to monitoring and improving test coverage and efficiency. Support tooling and workflow improvements for scalability.
  4. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with QA, developers, and product managers to understand requirements and define test strategies. Align test scenarios with real-world user behaviour and business outcomes. Collaborate with platform or DevOps engineers to optimise CI/CD test integration.

Technical Skills & Experience Required:

  • Proficiency in Playwright with TypeScript.
  • Solid understanding of UI and API automation techniques.
  • Experience integrating tests into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions).
  • Hands-on experience with collaborative codebases (Git, branching workflows).
  • Familiarity with DOM structure, CSS selectors, and API interactions.

Soft Skills

  • Self-directed with the ability to operate autonomously.
  • Strong communicator capable of clarifying ideas across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Pragmatic and iterative approach, prioritising value and maintainability.
  • Proactive in identifying opportunities for improvement.

Ideal Profile

  • 5-8 years in QA Automation roles.
  • Experience delivering high-quality test automation solutions in product-focused environments.
  • Strong understanding of automation patterns and end-user behaviour.
