Full time starting salary is normally in the range £46,735 to £55,755 with potential progression once in post to £62,728

Grade: 8

Full Time, Fixed Term contract up to January 2032

Closing date: 26th June 2025

This role is also open as an internal secondment opportunity which would need to be agreed by your current line manager.

Background

The Involvement and Engagement Team work within the Birmingham Public Involvement Hub which is part of the College of Medicine and Health. Our team members benefit from the shared knowledge and expertise of the group entering an established team of existing of Public Involvement colleagues within the College. Staff also have strong working relationships with research teams whom they are supporting and often co-locate with the research team to ensure efficient public involvement support.

As part of our team, you will lead collaboration with talented colleagues, sharing knowledge and expertise to advance public involvement across diverse projects. You'll also have the opportunity to lead within specialty areas such as communications, training, and global community engagement, contributing to innovative strategies that amplify the public voice in research.

Working across relevant research programmes, the postholder will be the designated lead for the Central and North West Midlands Commercial Research Delivery Centre (CRDC) and will work to deliver on the Public Involvement objectives within the Centre. You will lead, working with and through others, to foster meaningful relationships with patients and the public, ensuring their voices inform decisions and priorities in research delivery. Leading the creation and implementation of strategies that promote inclusion, diversity, and trust within the research environment, ensuring our research reflects and benefits the diverse communities of the Central and North West Midlands. In this role, you will become a valued member of the team and have a critical position in co-ordinating Public Involvement across the region, gaining access to a supportive network that offers friendship, expertise, and guidance across all aspects of your responsibilities.

Role Summary

The Senior Public Involvement Manager role is a key leadership position within the Involvement and Engagement Team. This post will be responsible for driving public involvement activities, advancements and initiatives through effective leadership and strategic oversight. This post will also work to deliver strategic direction for the public involvement within the Commercial Research Delivery Centre hosted by Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital.

The Senior Public Involvement Manager will be responsible for top level strategic planning, co-ordination of public involvement across infrastructures and driving public involvement initiatives across the team and partners. The postholder will manage senior internal and external stakeholder relationships and be an advocate for public involvement across the wider regional and national partnerships.

Collaboration is essential in this role to ensure that objectives are met not only in silo within individual projects and infrastructure but with consideration of joint initiatives that can provide mutual benefits across research landscape. The postholder will need excellent management, communication, time management and interpersonal skills to ensure efficient and effective public involvement delivery for our research. The postholder will be responsible for driving innovation in this space and enabling research teams to deliver creative public involvement with wider impact for all.

This role offers a unique chance to provide senior leadership to an exciting new Centre, ensuring that public perspectives are integrated into every stage of the research process. Main Duties

Project Delivery

  • Responsible for managing public involvement for large or multiple projects that may have contributors from multiple areas. This will include some or all of the following:
    • leading on the public involvement management of the project, including influencing and developing complex project plans
    • creating and maintaining an overall public involvement management plan for the whole project or projects using project management principles and using appropriate software
    • identifying objectives and indicators of success
    • planning, organising and maintaining a regular schedule of project meetings and ensuring sufficient engagement by all relevant parties to the project
    • establish effective networking relationships with all stakeholders
    • managing the budget for the project as required
    • delivering project outputs agreed with senior management, on time, to budget and to the agreed quality standard
Monitoring, evaluation and communication

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive public involvement evaluation strategy for the project.
  • Establish and implement reporting procedures which meet requirements, and ensure all necessary data is gathered in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Analyse data to determine if it is fit for purpose, and take appropriate action to ensure data quality where necessary.
  • Develop reporting mechanisms for the project then report on project progress to the project board or equivalent and highlight any risks.
  • Maintain a risk register as appropriate, and communicate risks in a timely manner, proactively proposing solutions.
  • Engage and communicate with a variety of stakeholders to ensure progress but also to disseminate outputs of the project as appropriate.

People management

  • Manage diverse groups of staff ensuring relevant targets and goals are achieved within resource constraints.
  • Create a motivating environment where staff are challenged, developed, encouraged and supported to achieve outstanding results.
  • Responsible for ensuring all annual review processes, including Performance and Development Reviews are conducted in the service area.
  • Identify appropriate opportunities for development and change and encourage other team members to do the same.
  • Guide staff through periods of change, communicating a clear and positive vision.

General

  • Actively manages equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring and evaluation and actively challenging unacceptable behaviour.
  • Supports the University’s sustainability agenda through resource efficient working.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the grade.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

  • Relevant degree or relevant equivalent professional qualification, plus significant public involvement management experience (in increasingly large and/or complex projects) or substantial relevant experience evidencing the experience required in this role
  • Proven knowledge and experience of managing public involvement and engagement in health and social care research.
  • Extensive experience of the UK Standards for Public Involvement to develop working practices relevant to Public Involvement.
  • Experienced at giving and receiving feedback from public contributors
  • Authoritative knowledge of the work practices, processes and procedures relevant to the role, including broader sector/commercial awareness.
  • Evidence of literacy and numeracy, with the ability to write clearly for a variety of audiences, and to produce and analyse source material, information and data.
  • Proven ability to meet targets, with minimal supervision to deadlines
  • Substantial experience of engaging, and collaborating, with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven analytical and problem solving skills that will help to identify and implement improvements and efficiencies across the project or projects you work on
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including orally and in writing, with the ability to influence and negotiate effectively with a range of stakeholders
  • Experience of managing large financial budgets along with experience of budget planning and forecasting
  • Highly proficient IT skills, including the MS Office suite. You should be confident and able to quickly learn new IT skills and software packages as required
  • Excellent people management skills, with proven experience of leading, motivating and managing teams
  • High level of self-motivation and personal accountability with ability to plan and deliver goals to deadlines under pressure
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate the extent to which equality and diversity legislation, policies, procedures are applied.
  • Ability to identify issues with the potential to impact on protected groups and take appropriate action.
  • Experience of championing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in own work area.
