Job overview

We invite applications from enthusiastic Clinical / Counselling Psychologists interested in working within the Wigan Mental Health Liaison Team at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. This established multi-disciplinary team supports hospital service users experiencing physical health issues and mental health crises.

You will join our existing team, including an 8b Psychologist and an Assistant Psychologist, and be part of a broader network of psychologists across inpatient and home-based treatment teams.

Your clinical responsibilities will include psychological assessments and interventions. Experience or strong enthusiasm for working with trauma and mental health needs is essential. Experience in multidisciplinary settings is advantageous. The role requires active contribution to team and multidisciplinary work, with high standards of communication. Indirect work includes providing consultancy, supervision, and training, with regular clinical supervision from the Principal Clinical Psychologist.

This is a permanent position, with flexible working options. Applications are welcome from recently qualified or trainee psychologists seeking development at Band 7-8a levels.

Main duties
  • Conduct rapid, highly specialist psychological assessments and formulations to guide patient management and safe discharge, especially for those with dementia or frequent emergency department attenders.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary decision-making regarding patients with psychological difficulties admitted to hospital wards and emergency departments.
  • Develop psychological components of assessments for physically unwell patients.
  • Deliver brief psychological interventions as appropriate.
  • Provide information and education to families, carers, and care systems.
  • Use psychological formulations to promote resilience and reduce vulnerability, aiming to prevent future crises.
  • Deliver training to Liaison service staff on psychological understanding, assessment, formulation, and interventions.
  • Offer consultation and supervision to team staff in psychological and psycho-social formulations and interventions.
