Bring your environmental passion for rivers to life!
The South East Rivers Trust (SERT) has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual interested in river and catchment enhancement work to make a positive, lasting impact on the aquatic environment in south east England.
The Role:
The Water and Land Stewardship Team (W&LS) leads the identification and implementation of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to improve rivers and catchments across the South East. This senior role involves leading and developing NbS project opportunities, focusing on impact, scale, and collaboration.
You will be responsible for delivering projects that scale up NbS across the SERT area and leading the ‘South East demos’ for the Ofwat Innovation Mainstreaming Nature-based Solutions project, a five-year initiative with UK water industry partners. Collaborating with colleagues, you will implement NbS measures on the ground, influencing regulators and policymakers to address barriers and enable large-scale NbS deployment.
Your duties include conducting walkovers, reporting on project opportunities, developing natural flood management, riparian corridor enhancement, and land management projects to increase catchment resilience. You will work closely with land managers to co-design feasible NbS options that deliver multiple benefits, informed by data and evidence. Additionally, you will identify and review nature market opportunities, including Biodiversity Net Gain, water resource management, and water quality initiatives, seeking funding opportunities and developing blended funding approaches with public and private sources.
You will collaborate with regional water companies, leveraging your understanding of their drivers and processes to implement more NbS solutions, building on existing relationships within the Trust and the wider Rivers Trust network.
This role requires a collaborative partnership approach, fostering relationships with water companies, farmer clusters, NGOs, regulators, and local authorities. You will provide strategic vision to these stakeholders to drive river and catchment improvements.
The position offers variety and ownership of projects, encouraging resolution-finding and collaboration. It provides opportunities to learn new skills and grow within a supportive environment. The ideal candidate will be personable, inquisitive, data-driven, able to communicate technical concepts simply, and passionate about rivers and the environment.
While the role covers the entire SERT area, a geographic focus on either the East (Sussex, Kent) or West (Hampshire, Berkshire, Surrey) is expected.
