Project Manager / Senior Project Manager – Power & Grid Connections (ICP)
Location: East Midlands/Northwest
Contract: Full-Time, Permanent
Package: DOE
The Assignment
Our executive search practice has been exclusively retained by a leading, high-growth Independent Connection Provider (ICP) to appoint exceptional Project Managers and Senior Project Managers.
Our client is at the forefront of the UK’s energy transition and digital infrastructure expansion, engineering and energising high-voltage contestable grid connections that power mission-critical assets nationwide. Backed by a substantial pipeline of secured schemes, they offer an autonomous, technically challenging environment for delivery leaders who excel under modern NEC and JCT contractual frameworks.
The Opportunity & Scope
Operating with full cradle-to-grave accountability, successful candidates will lead connection schemes from initial contestable design integration through to civil works, balance of plant (BOP), transformer/switchgear commissioning, and formal DNO/IDNO energisation:
- Take complete ownership of standalone grid connection schemes valued typically between £2m and £10m+
- Provide strategic direction across major multi-connection programmes and complex turnkey assets valued up to £30m+, leading integrated site delivery and multidisciplinary subcontractor teams
You will direct schemes across 11kV, 33kV, and 132kV networks spanning high-demand sectors:
- Hyperscale and colocation data centres requiring high-resilience, dual-feed primary substation connections
- Major utility-scale solar PV developments, co-located Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and private-wire distribution
- Strategic distribution hubs, high-power automated logistics parks, and energy-intensive manufacturing facilities
- High-density mixed-use schemes and high-rise residential towers requiring complex inner-city network connections
- Full turnkey 33kV/132kV new build substations, plant replacements, switchgear extensions, and DNO/National Grid ESO interface modifications
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all project stages—civil groundworks, HV cabling routes, directional drilling, equipment procurement, installation, cold/hot commissioning, and final asset transfer
- Partner closely with internal commercial teams to actively administer contracts under NEC (NEC3/NEC4 ECC) and JCT (Design & Build) forms—mitigating risk, notifying EWNs/CEs, and managing variations, extensions of time, and loss/expense claims
- Serve as the primary operational representative to Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), Independent Distribution Network Operators (IDNOs), National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET), private developers, and statutory undertakers
- Establish and manage critical-path delivery programmes (Primavera P6 / MS Project), driving milestone delivery, cost-to-complete forecasts, and profit margin targets
- Embed high-voltage SHEQ leadership across all operations in compliance with CDM (2015) regulations and relevant network safety rules
- Lead and develop package managers, site supervisors, and assistant project managers, fostering a safety-first delivery culture
Candidate Profile
Our client is seeking commercially astute delivery leaders with a proven track record within the UK power, ICP, or utility infrastructure space:
- Demonstrable experience delivering contestable grid connection packages or HV infrastructure (11kV to 132kV)
- Confident, practical application of NEC3/NEC4 and/or JCT Design & Build contracts in a live delivery environment
- Solid grounding in substation construction, cable route installation transformer/switchgear packages, and network energisation sequences.
- Education & Qualifications:
- Degree, HND, or HNC in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent operational experience.
- Recognised Project Management certification (e.g., APM PMQ, Prince2 Practitioner) is advantageous
- Valid CSCS, SMSTS, and a full UK driving licence
- Exposure to DNO distribution safety rules (e.g., SAP background or appreciation) is highly regarded
