Our Route

Central route is at the heart of Britain's railway. The route covers a major part of the national rail network and is a key commuter line in and out of Birmingham, with hundreds of thousands of passengers, and thousands of tonnes of freight carried within our route each week. Within our route is the Chiltern Main Line between London Marylebone and the West Midlands, the Snow Hill line from Stratford-upon-Avon to Worcester, the Cross City line in Birmingham, and lines to other cities including Wolverhampton, Coventry, Walsall, and Oxford.

We are home to Birmingham New Street station, the busiest station outside of London with more than 170,000 passengers using it every day.

Brief Description

As Senior Project Engineer (E&P) reporting to the Programme Engineering Manager, you'll have responsibility for leading the development and implementation of the E&P Central Route NW&C for ASPRO, Enhancement Development and Self Delivery .

In addition to the specific E&P (specialisation in HV and LV distribution) design and construction responsibilities this role is required to undertake the duties of Designated Project Engineer on multi discipline Railway Projects joining an established multi-disciplinary team to manage design and/or construction activities for engineering activities on allocated projects. This includes.

  • 25kV distribution
  • 11kV distribution
  • Signalling power supply
  • DNO/ Low voltage supply
  • Point heating
  • M&EE
  • An awareness of an OLE

Managing so that appropriate engineering standards are used in relation to design and/or construction within the programme with compliance to the requirements of the PACE (Project Acceleration in a Controlled Environment), relevant legislation, Railway Group and company standards, and Network Rail procedures.

You will be a self-motivated individual leading engineering development to fruition for projects implemented within the Programme and monitor whether suitably qualified and experienced staff are employed to control engineering aspects of all projects within the functional discipline.

This role is based in Baskerville House office in Birmingham. You will be required to be in the office at minimum of 3 days per week. The role will also involve flexible working from other offices and site location(s) as and when necessary.

About the role (External)

What will you be doing?

As a senior Project Engineer you will be responsible for the following:

1. Implement digital railway systems and procedures to deliver a cost effective, high quality and safe approach to design, construction, commissioning and other technical activities on relevant projects. Review all relevant legislation and liaise with relevant governmental departments.

2. Monitor the competence of all Project Engineers working on projects associated with Digital Railway Programme outputs and provide functional guidance.

3. Apply engineering controls and procedures to all projects and check whether all design and construction contracts include reference to appropriate Railway Group and Company standards applicable to their discipline.

4. Apply relevant techniques and procedures of quantified and qualitative risk assessment and HAZOP analysis to all projects and check whether the environmental aspects of all projects are managed in accordance with Environmental Policy.

5. Monitor all projects for compliance with Railway Group and Company standards and Digital Railway Programme project control procedures.

6. Advise project and programme management in respect of all construction activities, testing and commissioning, and site supervision. Monitor whether the design and construction elements meet the requirements of legislation, including construction design management (CDM) regulations.

7. Assure whether contractors' design, construction and specialist personnel are competent.

8. Undertake reviews of design and construction activities. Arrange audits of contractors to monitor whether safety and quality of design, construction testing and commissioning and management systems are adequate.

9. Carry out the duties of designated project engineer (DPE) to fulfil the requirements of Network Rail engineering management standards and procedures.

10. Undertake accident investigations when remitted to by the relevant designated competent person to identify root causes/corrective actions required and to disseminate learning.

In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:



• Significant experience in engineering disciplines, ideally with involvement in construction and design projects across multi discipline areas

• Technical qualifications to at least HND level or equivalent

• Membership of a relevant professional institution

• Experience of major contracting

• Knowledge of structuring safety cases in support of projects

• Knowledge of safety management and quality assurance

• Understanding of the arrangements required for the independent assessment of works

• Accident investigation experience

It's not mandatory to have the below, but it would be desirable to have:



• Six Sigma Yellow Belt

• Chartered status or equivalent in the particular discipline

• Appreciation of environmental issues in engineering works.

Salary: starting from £55,596 raising to £62,546 per annum. Network Rail adheres to a structured pay framework, any salary offered will be within the pay range advertised.
