London Gatwick Airport is seeking a Senior Project Engineer to lead design management for a portfolio of commercial and fit-out projects. You will shape project briefs, coordinate design teams, and ensure value-for-money outcomes across multiple stakeholders.

The role blends office-based design work with site coordination and requires a proactive, collaborative approach to deliver complex projects at the airport.

Qualifications

• University degree in Architecture or Engineering or related Construction discipline.
• Chartered membership (RIBA/ARB) or engineering institution desirable.
• Knowledge of technical/regulatory requirements for commercial building and fit-out projects.
• Experience in scoping projects and preparing detailed briefs; knowledge of relevant British Standards.
• Familiarity with NEC contracts and project delivery environments.
• Experience coordinating design teams and multi-disciplinary resources.

Responsibilities

This role takes an office first hybrid approach here at London Gatwick, with three days a week in the office, two days remote, managed around the needs of the business.

As a Senior Project Engineer, you will have the opportunity to take a lead in the design management of ground-breaking projects that will shape the future of London Gatwick. This role is focused on our Commercial Programme of works, which is primarily property and retail-led, building and fit-out projects.

Your role is pivotal in leading the design of a variety of strategically important projects for Gatwick Airport, ensuring that design meets project requirements, whilst achieving real value for money. This role is involved in every stage of the project process, including ensuring all projects are installed in line with approved designs.

What will you do?

Reporting to the Commercial Programme Design Manager, you will play a key role in the Construction team, responsible for ensuring design meets needs across varied £multi-million projects, including running the design aspects of a small portfolio of your own projects through the design phase to completion.

We are looking for someone with a passion for delivering projects with a high quality architectural ‘look and feel', while responding to the practicalities of our operational environment at Gatwick. Experience of commercial building of fit out projects would be advantageous. Candidates with an architectural, structural or building services design or main contractor background with the right level of technical and managerial experience, who would like to make the move client side, would be welcomed.

This is an area with a significant potential pipeline of work at London Gatwick and, as such it is expected that the Senior Project Engineer will support the Programme Design Manager in shaping and developing this pipeline. This may include engaging in very early pre-project definition discussions with the sponsors etc., and developing the wider team to ensure we can cover the range of project types and sizes within the Commercial Programme.

Other duties include:

• Developing project scope to meet the business needs along with delivering effective design management on individual projects.
• Developing the design brief for external design consultants, ensuring that the design contract is implemented and effectively managed through the design process.
• Seeking sustainable design solutions to meet project requirements, ensuring implementation of measures (such as energy-efficient design, materials selection, waste reduction, and transportation optimisation) aimed at preventing, reducing and remediating carbon emissions that arise from the construction.
• Working with multiple stakeholders to support the successful delivery of projects
• Seeking cost effective design solutions and managing external design consultants
• Providing technical input to any design changes through the lifecycle of the project.
• Undertaking the role of Principal Designer Contact to discharge the duties of Principal Designer (CDM Regulations 2015) with the support of CDM Advisor.

• University Degree in Architecture or an Engineering discipline or Construction related Degree (or equivalent)
• Qualifications – A Chartered Member of RIBA (or ARB) or a recognised Engineering Institution is highly desirable.
• Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of technical and regulatory requirements related to their field of expertise (commercial building and fit-out projects).
• Demonstrable experience in project scoping and preparing detailed project briefs.Working knowledge of relevant British Standards and their practical application.
• Knowledge of the NEC suite of contracts and their use within project delivery environments.
• Experience in coordinating design teams and multi-discipline engineering resources is desirable.
