Your new team

This position sits in our Chivas Brothers business. At Chivas Brothers, our 1,600-strong team across 27 sites is committed to upholding the heritage of Scotch and ensuring its sustainable future, as well as opening it up to new audiences across the globe.

The scope of Operations stretches from Procurement through conversion (distillation and maturation) and manufacturing (or bottling) to all the downstream Supply Chain activities until the final product is delivered. In addition, Operations play a very active role in Innovation, Talent Development and Operational Risk Management.

Our Production function encompasses everything from the distilling of our products, through to Filling, Maturation, Warehousing, and the final Draining & Vatting, and is spread across central and northern Scotland, as well as gin operations in England. The Project Engineering team are responsible for designing and implementing capital investment projects that support business objectives for production growth, carbon reduction, safety, efficiency, and compliance. Individual project values will vary between £50,000 and £75million, with multiple projects running concurrently.

Your unique contribution

The Senior Project Engineer will have full responsibility for Plant and Equipment work package design and vendor management. You will act as lead engineer on large multi-disciplinary projects, ensuring that allocated discipline engineers work to a combined project plan.

You will have six main areas of responsibility:

  • Project Scoping – Assist internal customers in the definition of user requirements for multidisciplinary engineering projects and define the project scope based on these.
  • Project Management – Manage multi-disciplinary teams to execute CAPEX projects across all functions, taking overall responsibility for all aspects of project management from approval of funding to commissioning and handover. You will be responsible for the budget, schedule, scope, and HS&E compliance.
  • Design Process – Lead the design process for your discipline/area of expertise and co-ordinate overall design process between other engineering disciplines. This will include the specification, design and purchasing of major plant and equipment items.
  • Project Installation & Commissioning – Manage contractors during construction phase, ensuring that works are executed safely and on schedule. You will then support contractors and site operations teams during the commissioning phase.
  • Improvements/Innovation – Investigate, recommend and implement new technologies and plant modifications which benefit reliability, safety or production. You will also develop new or better ways of working, utilising systems and technology, to improve the project execution process.
  • Team Development - Coach, mentor and develop less experienced discipline and project engineers within the team.

Who you’ll be working with

Internally, you will collaborate within the Engineering Team and will collaborate with other functions such as Health & Safety, Environmental, Procurement, Finance and Legal teams. You will also collaborate extensively with site Engineering and Operations teams across the business.

Externally, you will collaborate with contractors, consultants, suppliers, regulators and local authorities.

Your blend of talent

This position could be right for you if you:

  • Are educated to degree level in Mechanical or Process Engineering or similar and relevant discipline.
  • Are a Chartered or working at Chartered Engineer level and progressing towards chartership application.
  • Have strong technical and safety leadership skills.
  • Have extensive industrial experience within whisky industry or within process, chemical, and manufacturing industries.
  • Have practical experience of commissioning and troubleshooting process plant.
  • Have practical experience and knowledge of legislation governing engineering work within hazardous industries.
  • Have project engineering and management experience, including the use of project management tools and techniques in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Are commercially and financially aware with knowledge of corporate financial systems, tendering processes and contract preparation.
  • Have a full UK Drivers Licence.
  • Are proficient in use of software for delivery of projects: Word, Excel, MS Project, PowerPoint, AutoCAD.
