Job summary

CMR Surgical is seeking a Senior Product Engineer to join our Data Products team. You will design and build web applications and data products that turn our data into tangible value — for internal teams and external partners.

This frontend‑leaning full‑stack role emphasizes React/TypeScript and Python, with integration to Databricks and APIs. You’ll own products from prototype to production and BAU in a fast‑paced, scale‑up environment within a larger organisation.

Qualifications

  • Has a proven track record of designing, building, and shipping web applications from concept to production and ongoing operation.
  • Strong experience building modern frontend applications, ideally with React, TypeScript, or similar technologies.
  • Proficient in Python and comfortable working across the stack to get things done.
  • Experience integrating applications with data platforms such as Databricks, Snowflake, or similar Lakehouse environments.
  • Familiar with AWS and cloud-native deployment patterns.
  • Active use of AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, Codex, or similar) to accelerate build velocity.
  • Has worked in a startup or scale-up environment with real autonomy and visible contributions.
  • Bias for delivery: shipping working solutions and iterating rather than waiting for perfect conditions.
  • Clear communicator, able to collaborate with technical and non-technical colleagues, with emphasis on quality and maintainability.

Responsibilities

  • Build frontend‑led web applications and data products — with a strong emphasis on frontend experience and pragmatic integration with existing backend and data services.
  • Translate UX/UI designs into polished, maintainable interfaces — working closely with our UX/UI designer to bring clean, functional front‑end experiences to life.
  • Integrate those applications with our Databricks Lakehouse, APIs, and a range of other internal source systems and data services.
  • Take ownership of the full engineering arc: building fast to learn, then hardening and scaling what’s proven to work.
  • Use AI‑assisted development tools to build quickly, while maintaining hands‑on discipline to review and refine code.
  • Own the product lifecycle from prototype to production and BAU — sustain applications through live operation and improvement.
  • Collaborate with Principal and Staff Engineers on architecture decisions and technical direction.
  • Contribute to the team’s ways of working with a delivery‑first mindset.

Job description

At CMR Surgical, we’re revolutionising the future of minimal access surgery with Versius, our next‑generation surgical robotic system. We’re growing fast, and we’re on a mission to transform how surgery is delivered globally for the benefit of patients, clinicians, and healthcare systems.

Our values—Ambitious, Humble, People‑Focused, and Fair & Responsible—define our approach to innovation, partnership, and growth. If you believe in making a meaningful difference in healthcare and want to be part of a purpose‑driven company with bold ambitions, now is the time to join us.

CMR is an exciting and evolving company to be joining right now. Our commitment to our goal of building a world‑class medical devices company is underpinned by the ground‑breaking innovation of our next generation of surgical robots and a diverse team of talented and supportive individuals.

We’re breaking new ground which makes working here exciting, it provides autonomy, opportunity and makes the things you do visible. Come and join us and see what you’re capable of.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Senior Product Engineer to join our Data Products team and help us design and build the web applications and data products that turn CMR’s data into real, tangible value — for the teams and partners who depend on it every day. This is a full stack role with a strong direction towards the front end.

You’ll sit within a small, cross‑functional squad alongside a Product Manager, Data Engineer, Senior Analytics Engineer, and UX/UI designer, with close support from Principal and Staff Engineers in the wider data organisation. This is a team that moves with purpose. We validate ideas early with working prototypes, build with care, and ship products that genuinely matter — from internal tools that help our people work smarter, to B2B data products that extend our data capabilities to external partners and customers.

The work spans the full arc of product development — cradle to grave. You’ll take ideas from rough hypothesis to working prototype, test them with real users, lead the engineering effort to take validated concepts into production, and then own and sustain those products through BAU. This isn’t a team where you throw something over a wall once it’s shipped; you’ll carry genuine responsibility for what you build, for as long as it runs. You’ll integrate primarily with our Databricks Lakehouse, but will also need to connect with other source systems, APIs, and data services across the business.

You’ll work alongside engineers who care about doing this well and who bring a healthy balance of pragmatism and craft. You’ll also be someone who reaches for AI‑assisted development tools — like Claude Code and Codex — to build at speed, while having the hands‑on engineering depth to review, quality check, and make precise code changes when it counts.

This role is well suited to someone who has thrived in a startup or scale‑up environment — someone comfortable with a degree of ambiguity, who values real autonomy, and who wants their work to be genuinely visible. You’ll be part of a small team operating within a larger organisation, which means you’ll have the support structure of a scaled company with the energy and pace of an early‑stage one.

This is a hybrid role with a minimum of 1 day per week in our Cambridge office.

Responsibilities

As a Senior Product Engineer in our Data Products team, you’ll play a central role in designing, building, and evolving the web applications and data products that make our data useful and accessible. You’ll work across the full product lifecycle — from early prototyping through to production delivery and ongoing improvement.

You will:

  • Build frontend‑led web applications and data products — with a strong emphasis on frontend experience and pragmatic integration with existing backend and data services.
  • Translate UX/UI designs into polished, maintainable interfaces — working closely with our UX/UI designer to bring clean, functional, and well‑crafted front‑end experiences to life.
  • Integrate those applications with our Databricks Lakehouse, APIs, and a range of other internal source systems and data services.
  • Take ownership of the full engineering arc: building fast to learn, then hardening and scaling what’s proven to work.
  • Use AI‑assisted development tools — such as Claude Code and Codex — to build quickly, while maintaining the hands‑on engineering discipline to review, quality check, and refine the output.
  • Own the product lifecycle from prototype to production and BAU — own and sustain the applications you build through live operation, improvement, and eventual retirement.
  • Collaborate with our Principal and Staff Engineers on architecture decisions, engineering standards, and technical direction.
  • Contribute actively to the team’s ways of working, bringing a pragmatic, delivery‑first mindset and a willingness to take on whatever the team needs.

We’d expect you to be willing to turn your hand to anything within the data team’s remit that helps the team deliver its objectives.

About you

This is a frontend‑leaning full stack role: your primary focus will be building high‑quality web applications, supported by the full‑stack judgement needed to integrate with Databricks, APIs, and internal systems, and to create lightweight backend services or data stores where the product requires them.

You’re someone who enjoys building things that work — shipping products that real people use, iterating on them, and taking pride in the quality of what you deliver. You’re equally comfortable moving fast on a prototype and taking the care needed to make something production‑ready.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has a proven track record of designing, building, and shipping web applications — taking products from early concept through to production and ongoing operation, with particular strength in frontend engineering, user experience, and turning product designs into robust, maintainable interfaces.
  • Has strong experience building modern frontend applications, ideally with React, TypeScript, or similar technologies.
  • Is proficient in Python and comfortable working across the stack to get things done.
  • Has experience integrating applications with data platforms such as Databricks, Snowflake, or similar Lakehouse/Warehouse environments, and connecting to a range of APIs and source systems.
  • Is familiar with AWS and comfortable working with cloud‑native deployment patterns.
  • Actively uses AI‑assisted development tools (Claude Code, Codex, or similar) to accelerate build velocity — and has the hands‑on engineering ability to review, assess, and refine AI‑generated code with confidence.
  • Has a startup or scale‑up background — you’ve worked in environments where the path isn’t always clear, where autonomy is real, and where your contribution is visible.
  • Has a bias for delivery: you’d rather ship something working and iterate than wait for perfect conditions.
  • Can communicate clearly with both technical and non‑technical colleagues, and enjoys working collaboratively in small, cross‑functional teams.
  • Cares about engineering quality — writing code that is understandable, testable, and built to last, not just code that works today.

At CMR we’re building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace; what matters most to us is that you identify with our values and are passionate about making a difference.
