Job summary

Stantec in the UK is seeking a Senior Process Engineer to join our growing water teams, delivering process engineering across water and wastewater projects with practical, sustainable solutions.

You will work with multidisciplinary teams across locations including Cambridge, London, and other UK offices, taking ownership of technical work packages, mentoring junior engineers and contributing to bid work and client engagements while supporting professional registration.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Chemical/Process Engineering or related discipline.
  • Experience in process engineering within water/wastewater/utilities sectors.
  • Experience in process design, calculations and mass balances.
  • Knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes and engineering principles.
  • Ability to own technical tasks within multidisciplinary projects.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage workload within a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop process engineering solutions across water and wastewater projects.

We’re looking for a Senior Process Engineer to join our growing teams in London, High Wycombe, Reading, Brighton, Southampton or Cambridge. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and specialists across a varied portfolio of UK water projects, with opportunities to build your technical expertise and take greater ownership of project delivery.

About The Role

As a Senior Process Engineer, you’ll take responsibility for key areas of process engineering delivery across a range of water and wastewater projects. You’ll combine your technical knowledge with practical project experience, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to develop effective engineering solutions.

You Will
  • Develop process engineering solutions across water and wastewater treatment projects.
  • Undertake process calculations, mass balances, hydraulic assessments and treatment process evaluations.
  • Develop and review technical reports, specifications, calculations and other project deliverables.
  • Take ownership of technical work packages, managing inputs, quality and delivery to agreed timescales.
  • Support process design development from concept through to detailed design and construction support.
  • Contribute to site investigations, asset assessments, optimisation studies and technical workshops.
  • Work closely with civil, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and environmental engineers to develop integrated solutions.
  • Engage with clients and project teams to understand requirements and translate challenges into practical engineering solutions.
  • Support and mentor less experienced engineers, sharing knowledge and contributing to the wider development of the team.
  • Contribute to technical innovation, best practice and continuous improvement across our Process Engineering work.

From improving treatment processes and optimising existing assets to supporting the development of new infrastructure, your technical contribution will help address some of the sector’s most important challenges.

As a Senior Engineer, you’ll also have the opportunity to broaden your project and client experience, develop your leadership skills and take increasing ownership of technically challenging work. You’ll be supported to build the experience needed for your next career step, whether that’s towards technical specialism, project leadership or professional registration.

ABOUT YOU Essential
  • Degree qualified in Chemical or Process Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience in process engineering within the water, wastewater, utilities or related sectors.
  • Practical experience in process design, calculations, mass balances, hydraulic assessments and/or treatment process evaluation.
  • Good understanding of water and/or wastewater treatment processes and engineering principles.
  • Experience taking ownership of technical tasks or work packages within multidisciplinary projects.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to develop practical engineering solutions.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to work with colleagues, clients and other project stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage your own workload and contribute effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer (CEng/IEng) or actively working towards
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution such as CIWEM, IChemE, ICE or IMechE.
  • Experience working with UK water companies and AMP investment programmes.
  • Experience across clean water or wastewater treatment, asset optimisation, process performance or infrastructure design.
  • Experience supporting site investigations, commissioning, testing or process optimisation activities.
  • Experience using digital tools and innovative approaches to improve process engineering delivery.
  • Experience supporting bids, frameworks, client relationships or business development activities.
  • Experience mentoring or supporting the development of less experienced engineers.
