You will be part of our industry-leading Transmissions and Distributions teams, partnering with clients, understanding their challenges, and applying your expertise to solve them.

As a Substation Design Engineer, you will work on engineering and construction projects mainly in industrial, transmission/distribution, and renewable sectors. You must understand complex, practical, regulatory, technical, and commercial issues and work constructively with a broad range of senior stakeholders.

• Design transmission protection systems for voltages up to kV.
• Review in-house and external contractor designs.
• Understand safe design and operation of electrical networks and development construction.
• Advise on design and changes.
• Possess specialist electrical knowledge; experience in other engineering fields is advantageous.
• Have substantial experience with Construction and Design Management (CDM).
• Ensure design projects are undertaken by competent personnel and review designs created by others.
• Propose and implement alternative solutions within transmission specifications and best practices.
• Deliver tasks and projects on time, within quality standards and budget.
• Conduct site visits and surveys as needed.
• Identify, assess, and manage risks proactively.
• Adopt the best technical solutions.
• Manage client interface, including infrastructure planners, project resources, and site meetings.
• Handle risk and CDM management.

Qualifications & Experience:

• Proven capability in power system protection design/application, especially at transmission voltage levels up to kV, gained within utilities, consultancies, or manufacturing. Distribution experience is also considered.
• Experience in Protection and Control design, feasibility studies, reports, and cost estimation.
• Ability to calculate relay settings and prepare logic files.
• Experience working with equipment suppliers, manufacturers, service providers, and professional bodies.
• Experience in detailed electrical schematic diagrams for substation protection and control systems.
• Knowledge of Busbar, Feeder, Transformer, Reactor, Circuit Breaker fail, DAR protections, and SCADA interface; FACTS and HVDC protection systems are desirable.
• Protection design using conventional and non-conventional Instrument Transformers.
• Knowledge of IEC communication protocols.
• Experience in preparing Single Line Diagrams, Substation Layouts, and Key Line Drawings.
• Proficiency with software like ASPEN OneLiner and ETAP.
• National Grid TP Protection and Settings authorization is advantageous.
• Strong communication skills for complex technical or commercial issues.
• Ability to lead cross-functional teams and develop relationships quickly.
• Proven experience in clear and concise documentation.
