Job summary

WSP is seeking a Senior/Principal Engineer in Building Structures to join our Leeds team. You will lead design for diverse projects from inception to handover, coordinating with architects, engineers and consults while guiding a multi-disciplinary team.

You’ll drive technical leadership, manage design reviews, support bid opportunities and maintain exciting client relationships in a dynamic office environment at Wellington Place.

Qualifications

• Degree or HNC/HND in a relevant discipline, Chartered status or path to Chartership.
• Solid experience in Civil & Structural detailed design and knowledge of national codes.
• Ability to produce calculations and demonstrate design concepts and briefs.
• Experience working with clients and multidisciplinary teams on complex projects.

Responsibilities

• Own and lead the design process for multi-disciplinary schemes from inception through handover.
• Provide technical leadership and coordinate with architects, engineers and consultants.
• Lead tender bids and contribute to business development opportunities.
• Manage commercial aspects, fees and project risk to meet programme targets.
• Mentor and support less experienced team members on technical reviews.

A little more about the role..

You will be joining our expanding Building Structures team, as a Senior or a Principal Engineer, with responsibility for the project management, technical leadership and delivery of schemes from inception through to handover of the completed scheme to the client.

In this role you’ll have the opportunity to:

• Develop innovative and sustainable designs from concept, for a huge range of challenging projects, ranging from transportation hubs, and tall towers to healthcare, defence and education schemes, all with national and local architects.
• Take a key Technical leadership role on multi-disciplinary design projects from concept stage through to detailed design, in coordination with Architects, Engineers, and specialist consultants.
• Participate in tender bids and business development opportunities as they arise
• Agree fees and manage the commercial position on projects
• Exercise independent judgement and resolve technical issues

You’ll be joining a team of diverse and talented individuals that work together to:

• Own and lead the design process, encouraging yours and wider teams to deliver the right solutions to the agreed programme, and support those less experienced by technical review, mentoring and advice
• Manage processes to ensure technical issues and risks are resolved in a timely and cost-effective manner
• form strong working relationships with other WSP disciplines, external design consultants, stakeholders and clients.
• provide sustainable development solutions from site selection through to detailed design and construction.
• provide specialist advice and design solutions to our clients on sustainable design, net zero carbon, MMC & DfMA.

Reporting to a senior member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work on some of the most exciting and high profile major multi-disciplinary development projects across the region, categorised into wide variety of sectors including Transportation, High-rise, Commercial & Mixed use, Retail, Education, and Healthcare, including recent wins in the Defence sector.

What we would like you to demonstrate.

• Degree or HNC/HND qualification in a relevant discipline
• Chartered or following a path to Chartership
• Solid experience in Civil & Structural detailed design;
• Detailed working knowledge of national codes and standards
• Proven understanding of the design process and ability to demonstrate working knowledge of brief/scope documents, design concepts as well as experienced in producing calculations
• Experience of working with structural design software packages such as Tekla Structural Designer, Tedds and Experience in CAD software such as Revit would be beneficial.
• Experience of working with clients and contractors with a diverse range of objectives in achieving a technical solution
