Job description

Job Description

Are you a Mechanical Engineer, with a background in either Mechanical Handling or Remote Operations, who thrives on solving difficult problems? Are you drawn to complex design projects and eager to move into leadership roles, heading projects and mentoring junior engineers?

If so, you’ll enjoy tackling some of the energy industry’s most challenging mechanical handling issues across various clients. Your work may include designing systems for radioactive waste packaging, fuel handling in nuclear reactors, maintenance for fusion reactors, supporting UK Submarine and SMR programs, or advancing renewable energy projects within a growing carbon net zero portfolio. The role involves juggling multiple projects, so adaptability is essential. The constant is the complexity of the tasks and the opportunity to provide innovative solutions to clients.

In all projects, you’ll contribute to deploying collaborative solutions that enhance safety and protect people, making a meaningful impact on future energy supply security.

If you are a self-starter capable of managing multiple projects, working closely with clients and internal teams to gather requirements, initiate projects, and deliver accurate, effective solutions, then we encourage you to apply.

Role requirements:
  • Work within small to medium-sized teams, contributing to a collaborative and supportive environment.
  • Bring a level of commercial awareness to effectively deliver tasks across multiple workstreams, ensuring they meet deadlines, quality, and budget expectations.
  • Your mechanical handling expertise will be valuable, but transferable mechanical engineering skills may also be utilized in non-mechanical handling projects within the nuclear industry.
Essential criteria:
  • Degree qualified mechanical engineer (or relevant qualification).
  • Experience designing and substantiating mechanical handling or remote handling systems and equipment.
  • Proven ability to write detailed technical reports and specifications.
  • Experience engaging with clients, understanding their issues, goals, and processes.
  • Experience working in regulated engineering environments with proper QA processes.
Desirable criteria:

Experience in any of the following is a plus, but not mandatory:

  • Nuclear industry experience.
  • Design and implementation of mechanical handling equipment like cranes, hoists, or conveyers.
  • Automation or robotic technologies.
  • Bidding in safety-critical, regulated environments.
  • Knowledge of design codes such as BS EN13001, BS 2573, or ASME B30.
  • Understanding of LOLER, Machinery Directive, CE/UKCA marking.
  • CAD skills, especially Autodesk Inventor.
  • Proficiency in hand calculations using tools like MATHCAD.
  • Chartered status or nearing professional registration.
