Job Description:

Job Description

Are you a Mechanical Engineer, with a background in either Mechanical Handling, or Remote Operations who thrives on difficult problems? Are you drawn to complex design projects and excited by the opportunity to rapidly move on to leadership positions, heading up projects and guiding junior engineers?

If so, you’ll enjoy solving the energy industry’s most important mechanical handling conundrums across a variety of clients. You could be designing systems to package radioactive waste for decommissioning, to handle fuel within new nuclear reactors, to develop maintenance capability for fusion reactors, to support the UK Submarine and Small Modular Reactor (SMR) programmes, or to enable renewable energy projects across a growing carbon net zero portfolio. You’re likely to be juggling several projects simultaneously, so being adaptable is essential! The constant in this role is the complex nature of the jobs and the chance to provide innovative solutions to a range of problems for several appreciative clients.

In whichever energy-related projects you get involved in, you’ll be engaged in deploying collaborative solutions to enhance safety – making a meaningful contribution to our future energy supply.

If you are a self-starter capable of delivering multiple projects, working closely with clients and internal teams to understand requirements, set up projects, and deliver right-first-time solutions for challenging problems, then we’d love to hear from you.

Read more about how you can thrive with us.

Role requirements:

You will work within small to medium-sized teams. To benefit from collective experience and drive innovative thinking, you’ll work in a collaborative and supportive office/site environment for at least half of your working week. You should bring a level of commercial awareness to effectively deliver tasks across multiple workstreams, ensuring delivery to time, quality, and cost. While your valuable mechanical handling expertise will be central, your transferable mechanical engineering skills may also be utilized on non-mechanical handling projects within the nuclear industry.

  • Degree qualified mechanical engineer (or relevant qualification).
  • Experience designing and substantiating mechanical handling or remote handling systems and equipment.
  • Experience in writing detailed, accurate technical reports & specifications (e.g., requirements, design substantiations, basis of analysis, safety case references).
  • Ability to engage with clients, work on-site, and understand their issues, goals, and processes.
  • Experience working within regulated engineering environments following QA processes.

Please indicate if you have experience in any of the following (but apply if you are interested in gaining that experience):

  • Nuclear industry experience.
  • Design and implementation of mechanical handling equipment/heavy machinery (e.g., cranes, hoists, grabs, conveyors, turntables).
  • Automation or robotic technologies.
  • Bid writing within safety-critical, regulated environments.
  • Design codes such as BS EN13001, BS 2573, or ASME B30.
  • LOLER, Machinery Directive, CE/UKCA marking requirements.
  • CAD, especially Autodesk Inventor, for 3D modeling and drawings.
  • Hand calculations (e.g., MATHCAD).
  • Chartered status or nearing application with a relevant professional institute.
