Job description

Job Description

Are you a Mechanical Design Engineer who thrives on solving difficult engineering problems? Are you interested in complex projects and eager to develop your technical leadership skills by heading multi-disciplinary projects?

If so, you might enjoy tackling the energy industry’s most important mechanical engineering challenges across various energy systems for diverse clients. You could be managing projects designing test rigs for UK nuclear fusion development, conducting structural integrity assessments of primary plant for civil and defence applications, designing high-integrity structures for new nuclear facilities, or leading renewable energy initiatives within a growing carbon net-zero portfolio. Since you'll be juggling multiple projects, adaptability is essential. The constant is the complex nature of these jobs and the opportunity to provide innovative solutions for a range of clients.

Regardless of the specific energy projects, you will be developing engineering solutions to industry challenges, making a meaningful contribution to UK and global energy and environmental security.

If you are a self-starter capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously, working closely with clients and internal teams to gather requirements, initiate projects, and deliver first-time-right solutions, then we encourage you to apply.

Role Requirements:

  • Degree qualified mechanical engineer (or relevant qualification).
  • Experience with design codes such as ASME, Eurocodes, BS EN13001, RCC-M, and HS&E legislation.
  • Experience in requirements gathering, including functional, non-functional, stakeholder, and regulatory needs.
  • Experience supervising optioneering studies to generate design solutions.
  • Experience reviewing mechanical engineering substantiation for new or existing plant.
  • Proficiency in preparing, reviewing, and approving technical reports and documentation (e.g., calculations, safety case reports).
  • Ability to liaise confidently with stakeholders at all levels, both internally and externally.
  • Proven success leading engineering projects with varying team sizes.
  • Experience delivering mechanical engineering solutions responsibly.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in safety-critical and regulated environments, including bid writing.
  • Knowledge of nuclear industry safety cases.
  • Experience with hazard/fault analysis methods (e.g., HAZOP, FMEA).
  • Chartered status or nearing application with a relevant professional institute.
