Job description

Our client, a leader in the water sector, is currently seeking an experienced Senior/Principal Hydraulic Modeller to join their team. This contract role involves working on a variety of projects supporting flood risk, river restoration, and catchment management for both public and private sector clients.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the development of 1D, 2D, and integrated hydraulic models for rivers, estuaries, and floodplains using software such as Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, HEC-RAS, and InfoWorks ICM (2D).
• Carry out flood risk assessments (FRA), flood hazard mapping, and hydrological analysis using ReFH2, WINFAP, FEH, and LowFlows.
• Interpret LiDAR, topographical, and hydrometric data to support model development.
• Provide technical input into environmental assessments, flood alleviation schemes, and climate resilience strategies.
• Prepare high-quality reports and communicate technical findings to clients, regulators, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Mentor junior team members and review technical work.
• Support project management, bids, and client engagement.

Job Requirements:

• Degree (BSc/MSc) in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Hydrology, or a related field.
• Significant experience in environmental hydraulic modelling.
• Proficiency in Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, HEC-RAS, and GIS (ArcGIS/QGIS).
• Strong understanding of hydrology and flood risk legislation (e.g. NPPF, SuDS, EA guidance).
• Excellent report writing and communication skills.
• Experience working with or for the Environment Agency, Lead Local Flood Authorities (LLFAs), or similar bodies is desirable.
• Chartered or working towards chartership (ICE, CIWEM, or equivalent) is a plus.

Desirable Experience:

• River restoration, natural flood management (NFM), or habitat enhancement schemes.
• Catchment-based approaches and integrated catchment modelling.
• Working knowledge of Python or SQL for automating modelling workflows.
• Familiarity with BIM or digital delivery tools.
