About the role

Balfour Beatty is seeking a Senior Primary Design Engineer to join their Power T&D team in Newcastle. The primary responsibility is the delivery of electrical substation design for projects up to 400kV, supporting the Design Engineers. The role also involves assisting with planning and procurement for substation projects.

What you'll be doing

Key accountabilities:

• Deliver designs according to customer specifications, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and legislation.
• Review and approve HV plant design deliverables such as single line diagrams, layouts, SC calculations, earthing design, etc.
• Adhere to Health & Safety procedures and CDM regulations, advising on risks and mitigation measures.
• Ensure models and drawings are reviewed and approved, incorporating BIM best practices.

General Responsibilities:

• Follow company quality, health & safety, and environmental procedures.
• Deliver engineering design within schedule, quality, and budget constraints, promoting safety and sustainability.
• Function as an authorized approver of designs on contracts.

Commercial/Contract Responsibilities:

Report scope variations to the Design or Engineering Manager for approval before proceeding.

Design Responsibilities:

• Identify relevant standards and customer requirements, ensuring compliance.
• Design AIS and GIS substations up to 400kV, considering health, safety, and environmental procedures.

Who we're looking for

Education:

• Minimum HNC in Electrical Engineering or equivalent; a degree is preferred.
• Member of IET (MIET) and working towards CEng chartership.

Experience:

• Experience liaising with customers and suppliers.
• Design and specification of electrical power systems.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM360.
• Experience as HV Substation / Primary Plant Design Engineer.
• Basic understanding of P&C aspects is advantageous.
• TP141 HV Substation qualification is a plus.
