About the role

Balfour Beatty is currently looking for a Senior Primary Design Engineer to join their Power T&D team in Newcastle.

The main function of this role is primary engineering design delivery for electrical substation projects up to 400kV, with support from Design Engineers.

The role also involves supporting the team in planning and procurement responsibilities related to substation project delivery.

What you'll be doing

Key accountabilities:

• Deliver design to customer specifications, ensuring compliance with relevant and international standards and legislation.
• Check and approve HV plant design deliverables, such as single line diagrams, layout/elevation drawings, MEWP access layouts, SC force calculations, earthing design/calculations, etc.
• Work in accordance with health & safety procedures and company obligations under current CDM regulations, advising on risks and mitigation measures.
• Ensure models and drawings are reviewed and approved, including supplier and subcontractor supply chains, incorporating BIM best practices.

General Responsibilities:

• Perform duties in line with company quality, health & safety, environmental procedures, and business processes.
• Deliver engineering design on time, within budget, and to quality standards, leading safety and sustainability by design.
• Function as the authorized approver of designs and settings on contracts per published authorization levels.

Commercial/Contract Responsibilities:

• Report scope variations to the Design or Engineering Manager, indicating implications and obtaining approval before proceeding.

Design Responsibilities:

• Identify relevant standards and customer requirements, ensuring compliance with standards, legislation, and specifications.
• Conduct design work considering health, safety, and environmental procedures, including producing Designer Risk Assessments as needed.
• Design AIS and GIS substations up to 400kV.

Who we're looking for

Education:

• Minimum HNC in Electrical Engineering or equivalent; a degree is desirable.
• Member of IET (MIET) and working towards CEng chartership.

Experience:

• Liaising with customers and suppliers.
• Design and specification of electrical power systems.
• Performing calculations to verify design integrity.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD 2D/Revit, and BIM360.
• Experience as HV Substation/Primary Plant Design Engineer, with knowledge of P&C aspects and HV Substation qualifications preferred.
