Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Prepare and review primary substation designs.

• Produce design packs, drawings, and supporting documentation for both tender and construction stages.
• Provide engineering support during installation, FAT, SAT, and commissioning stages.
• Collaborate with secondary, civil, and protection & control engineers to deliver integrated design solutions.
• Support and mentor junior engineers and contribute to the improvement of design processes and standards.

Turner Lovell are recruiting on behalf of a leading utility and engineering services provider that delivers projects supporting the UK’s energy transition. As part of their continued growth in the power sector, our client is seeking a Senior Primary Design Engineer to join their expanding HV design team.

This role provides the opportunity to work on a range of high-voltage transmission and distribution projects for major UK clients, including TSOs and DNOs. You will take responsibility for developing and reviewing substation primary designs that are critical to the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the UK’s electricity network.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and review primary substation designs, including layouts, single line diagrams, and general arrangements.
• Carry out equipment selection, ratings, and sizing studies for transformers, switchgear, busbars, and HV cables.
• Ensure compliance with client technical specifications and industry standards.
• Produce design packs, drawings, and supporting documentation for both tender and construction stages.
• Provide engineering support during installation, FAT, SAT, and commissioning stages.
• Collaborate with secondary, civil, and protection & control engineers to deliver integrated design solutions.
• Support and mentor junior engineers and contribute to the improvement of design processes and standards.

Ideal Candidate Profile

• Degree or HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
• Proven background in primary substation design for HV transmission or distribution networks.
