Job summary

SSTL seeks a Senior Power Engineer - Analogue Design to lead design, analysis and verification of power systems for spacecraft. You will develop power electronics modules, drive verification, and ensure reliability across mission life cycles in a cradle-to-grave style role.

Based at SSTL's Guildford HQ with hybrid working options, you will interact with cross-disciplinary technical leads and deliver solutions on tight schedules.

Qualifications

  • BTEC / Degree in Electronics or equivalent.
  • Excellent understanding of analogue and power electronics.
  • Familiarity with microprocessor and FPGA interfacing.
  • Wide knowledge of electronic components, space environment preferred.
  • Experience with schematic capture and simulation software (Mentor Graphics, OrCAD PSPICE).
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently.
  • Results oriented and proactive; strong problem solving.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication.

Responsibilities

  • Capture requirements from top level to module level for analogue/power electronics.
  • Design and deliver analogue/power electronics modules meeting requirements on schedule and cost.
  • Manage and verify requirements.
  • Perform analyses (FMECA, WCA, PSA, reliability) to verify mission life expectations.
  • Specify and conduct hardware verification tests.
  • Author test plans, procedures and technical descriptions.
  • Develop components such as battery regulators, DC-DC converters, power distribution modules.

Job description

SENIOR POWER ENGINEER - ANALOGUE DESIGN (Job Ref: 2131)

An exciting opportunity to make a difference within the industry delivering highly innovative power solutions for spacecraft missions. This role involves responsibility for undertaking the design, analysis, development, verification and delivery of power system and energy conversion solutions into different missions, including power subsystem lead responsibility for those missions.

Engineers at SSTL have involvement on missions right from concept through to launch, commissioning and operational life; a true cradle to grave experience giving you the chance to see your work in Space in a rapid timescale. This key role will often sit within the core team of a satellite mission interacting with other technical leads across multiple disciplines to generate the technical solutions for innovative projects.

Key Tasks
  • Requirements capture and derivation from top level requirements to module level requirements
  • Design and delivery of Analogue/Power Electronics Modules in Spacecraft, which meet these requirements within the agreed schedule/cost
  • Management and verification of these requirements
  • Carrying out the required analysis to verify that these requirements will be met over the mission life‑time including FMECA, WCA, PSA, Reliability Analysis, etc
  • Specifying and carrying out the verification tests on hardware
  • Authoring of technical documents (including test/verification plans, procedures and technical descriptions)
  • Typical Analogue/Power Electronics Equipment in a spacecraft defined as follows: Batter Charge/Discharge Regulators, Power Distribution Modules, Relay/Activation Modules, Drive Electronics for motors/mechanism, DC‑DC converters (range from 5W‑1kW), Heater/Propulsion Control Boards, etc.
Previous Experience
  • At least 5 years Analogue/Power Electronics Design experience, ideally in the Space or Aerospace Industries
Qualifications Knowledge & Skills
  • BTEC / Degree in Electronics or equivalent
  • Excellent understanding of analogue and power electronics
  • Familiarity with microprocessor and FPGA interfacing
  • Wide knowledge of electronic components, preferably for a space environment
  • Wide experience with schematic capture and simulation software (i.e. Mentor Graphics, OrCAD PSPICE, etc.)
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities
  • Ability to work simultaneously on a variety of projects
  • Results orientated, can‑do approach
  • Pro‑active and able to take initiative
  • Good decision making and creative problem‑solving skills – being able to ‘think out of the box’
  • Highly organised with clear communication skills
  • Proven ability to deliver solutions under pressure and to tight timescales
  • Excellent inter‑personal skills – both written and oral communications; ability to interface with customers and technical representatives
  • Good knowledge of MS Office Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Able to demonstrate company mindsets and behaviours; Be accountable, Drive & delivery, Communicate effectively, Self‑manage effectively, Work as one team
