We are seeking an experienced Senior Power Electronics Engineer to join a technically ambitious engineering team working on the design and development of advanced power conversion and electronic systems.
This is a senior technical position suited to an engineer with substantial experience in power electronics, high-voltage systems and power conversion, combined with strong practical design, testing and problem-solving capability.
You will take ownership of complex engineering projects from initial requirements and concept development through detailed design, prototyping, verification and introduction into manufacture. The role offers significant technical autonomy and the opportunity to influence product architecture, design standards and engineering practices.
You will work across areas including power conversion, analogue and digital electronics, magnetics, control systems, simulation, PCB design, prototyping, testing and fault investigation.
What you'll be doing
- Leading the design and development of power electronic systems, power supplies, converters and associated electronic subsystems.
- Taking engineering projects from customer or system requirements through concept, detailed design, prototype build, verification and production introduction.
- Designing and analysing power conversion circuits, including DC-DC converters, switched-mode power supplies and high-voltage power stages.
- Producing technical specifications, schematics, calculations, design documentation, bills of materials, test plans and technical reports.
- Using professional schematic capture, PCB design and simulation tools such as KiCad or equivalent.
- Selecting and evaluating semiconductors, magnetic components, capacitors, protection devices and other power electronic components.
- Designing and reviewing gate-drive, control, sensing and protection circuits.
- Defining and conducting safe testing, validation, commissioning and fault-finding activities on power electronic hardware.
- Analysing test results and using engineering data to identify design improvements and resolve technical issues.
- Providing senior technical input into design reviews, customer discussions, technical investigations and engineering change processes.
- Supporting prototype builds, manufacturing and production engineering activities.
- Mentoring less experienced engineers and contributing to the development of engineering standards and best practice.
- Working closely with multidisciplinary teams including systems engineering, mechanical engineering, software, manufacturing, quality, procurement and commercial functions.
What we're looking for
- Degree, HND/HNC or equivalent experience in Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics or a related discipline.
- Significant professional experience in power electronics design and development.
- Strong understanding of power converter topologies, semiconductor switching, magnetics, control systems and power-stage design.
- Proven experience taking power electronic designs from concept through prototype, testing, validation and manufacture.
- Strong practical experience with laboratory testing, commissioning and fault-finding of electronic and power electronic systems.
- Experience with schematic capture, PCB design and circuit simulation.
- Excellent understanding of component selection, thermal management, PCB layout and design for reliability.
- Ability to investigate complex technical problems and develop practical, robust engineering solutions.
- Strong technical documentation and communication skills.
- Confidence leading technical discussions and making engineering decisions.
- A hands-on, methodical and safety-conscious approach with a high level of technical ownership.
Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous:
- High-voltage DC-DC converters and power supplies.
- Switched-mode power supplies and resonant converters.
- IGBT, MOSFET or SiC/GaN power stages.
- Gate-drive and protection circuit design.
- Digital control of power converters.
- Microcontrollers, DSPs or embedded control systems.
- Magnetics design and transformer/inductor development.
- EMC-conscious design and compliance.
- Thermal management and reliability engineering.
- Creepage, clearance and insulation coordination.
- Design for manufacture and production transfer.
- Defence, aerospace, automotive, energy, industrial, medical or other regulated/high-reliability environments.
- Professional registration or progression towards IEng or CEng.
What we offer
- £80,000 – £100,000 salary, depending on experience and technical capability.
- Competitive benefits package.
- Pension and healthcare provision.
- Generous annual leave entitlement.
- Flexible/hybrid working where appropriate.
- Significant technical ownership and autonomy.
- The opportunity to work on challenging, high-value power electronics projects.
- A senior engineering environment where your technical expertise can directly influence product design and development.
- Opportunities for continued professional development and progression.
The opportunity
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced power electronics engineer looking to take the next step in their career, with the autonomy and responsibility expected of a senior technical specialist.
You will be working on technically challenging projects where engineering judgement, practical design ability and the ability to solve difficult power electronics problems are highly valued.
