Job summary

CPI is seeking a Senior Research Scientist 1 - Process Chemistry (Polymers) in Sedgefield. The role focuses on polymer synthesis, process development and scale-up within a collaborative team.

You will design, develop and optimise chemical processes for sustainable materials and acrylic/vinyl polymerisations. The successful candidate will work across multidisciplinary projects, delivering robust, scalable methods and high-quality documentation while ensuring process safety and regulatory

Qualifications

• Strong practical chemistry experience.
• Designing, developing and scaling chemical processes.
• Experience in polymer synthesis and related reactions.
• Ability to conduct hazard reviews and process safety activities.
• Excellent technical reporting and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical delivery across process chemistry projects.
• Plan and execute experimental programmes for polymer and process development.
• Develop and optimise polymerisation reactions and routes.
• Support scale-up from lab to pilot-scale operations.
• Work safely with reactive, corrosive, and exothermic chemistries.
• Perform hazard reviews, risk assessments and process safety activities.
• Analyse data and translate observations into process improvements.
• Produce high-quality technical reports and project documentation.
• Act as a technical specialist within project teams and mentor juniors.
• Collaborate with customers, BD teams and external partners on opportunities.
• Contribute to growth of polymer chemistry capabilities.
