Role purpose and overview
The Senior Political Correspondent ensures that the Telegraph is providing its readers with the best coverage of live political news. They ensure The Telegraph is covering the political stories that matter for its readers, and that copy is quick, sharp and accurate with all of the essential context a reader needs.
The Senior Political Correspondent is passionate about political journalism, and hungry to break stories before the Telegraph's rivals.
They understand digital publishing and how to ensure content such as live blogs is of the highest quality.
The Senior Political Correspondent has excellent news judgement, and is able to quickly identify the best line from briefings and communicate this to editors quickly and persuasively.
Key responsibilities
- The Senior Political Correspondent is responsible for identifying the biggest live political news stories of the day for Telegraph readers. This includes major breaking stories, lines from lobby briefings and planned political announcements. It also includes spotting lines in debates, on social media and from sources that others are yet to break. As well as identifying the stories, the Senior Political Correspondent is responsible for taking these stories on and ensuring the Telegraph owns the most important political stories of the day for our readers.
- They are responsible for providing quick, accurate copy including running live blogs as necessary.
- They are expected to meet tight deadlines and to organise their schedule around the deadline demands of the newsroom.
- Under pressure, they are expected to identify the best line for a potential story and relay that information to news editors clearly and concisely .
- They are responsible for ensuring stories are accurate and legally compliant.
- They are expected to have an understanding of the stories which attract readers online and that readers and subscribers to the Daily Telegraph are interested in. Through their articles, they will help the company to reach its goal of attracting and retaining more subscribers online.
- They will help to manage the lobby team focusing on live political coverage.
Key skills- Experience working within the newsroom of a national media organisation or equivalent is essential. A proven track record as a political reporter who can bring in exclusive stories is essential.
- An ability to write clear, accurate copy, quickly, is essential.
- Experience of running live blogs is desirable.
- Experience of providing analysis, written and to camera, is desirable.
- A proven ability to develop sources and contacts is essential.
- A passion for and in depth knowledge of politics is essential.
- It is essential that candidates are able to process large amounts of detailed information quickly and accurately.
- Strong news judgement is essential.
- It is essential to be highly organised and able to work on multiple projects simultaneously while effectively prioritising different tasks.
- It is essential to be a strong verbal communicator, who is able to explain stories succinctly and clearly to editors. Being able to quickly and authoritatively explain why a story matters is essential.
- Knowledge of how best to present stories online is desirable.
