Job description

Senior Policy Advisor, Sustainable Finance (UK), London

This post based in E3G’s London headquarters and will help to ensure that the UK takes strong domestic action to integrate climate change into finance policy and public finance. This role will contribute to the delivery of transformative UK sustainable finance policy outcomes through leading policy research, strategic stakeholder management and coalition building, and developing high impact strategic priorities with the team.

The UK Sustainable Finance team
work at the forefront of designing innovative UK finance policies to shift to a net-zero economy. This includes leading alliance campaigns for a climate-focused public bank, mandatory transition plans for the private sector; ending UK fossil fuel finance overseas, and making the case for developing a Net-Zero Investment Plan as part of the national emission reduction strategy.

E3G is consistently ranked as one of the top ten most influential environmental think tanks in the world by the University of Pennsylvania’s Global Go To Think Tank Index.

Key Responsibilities

  • Helping to ensure that the UK delivers and implements an ambitious package of Sustainable Finance Reforms, including delivering the finance commitments made within the Government’s missions and the 2023 Green Finance Strategy, and ensuring that public finance institutions like the National Wealth Fund and GB Energy operate effectively. Support the UK Sustainable Finance team’s work in leveraging UK leadership into international for a e.g., COP, G7, G20.
  • Analysing and assessing policies relevant to the mobilisation of green finance in the UK, including monitoring and analysing the political context to inform policy engagement, campaign messaging and team strategy. Conduct research into key topics as needed.
  • Lead E3G’s engagement with key stakeholders on governance and public finance policy, including government officials, policymakers and key CSO and private sector stakeholders. Take a lead in building and managing relationships.
  • Producing internal and external communications materials and undertaking wider analysis. This may include, but is not limited to, briefings, articles, blogs, and reports. Lead on drafting and dissemination of E3G policy briefings, reports, and blogs.
  • Organise and service events promoting innovative collaborations among different stakeholders to promote sustainable finance solutions.
  • Develop new areas of interest/future E3G work around UK sustainable finance.
  • Strong strategic and leadership skills, including demonstrating initiative and being a self-starter in driving forward team priorities.
  • Any other reasonable management request.

Experience and Skills

The successful candidate will:

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline such as politics, social sciences, economics, climate change and environment or foreign policy.
  • 5-7 years relevant professional experience and track record in a relevant setting e.g. political, policy or research in government or international institution, civil society, think tank or research institute.
  • Strong experience of building relationships and networks, and working with partner organisations, coalitions, and networks including managing senior stakeholders.
  • A good working understanding of the implications of the low carbon transition on the finance sector and of the role of finance in sustainable development. Knowledge or experience in the UK sustainable finance policy landscape and decision-making processes.
  • A high level of initiative and be positive, organised, resilient and able to deliver high quality work on time. This should include demonstrating attention to detail combined with the ability to analyse complex information to create high-level summaries. Experience of project management.
  • Experience of advocating for solutions, and of communicating using a range of different media, e.g. reports, blogs, press, social media. This includes very strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Positive, can-do attitude and a strong team player, with an ability to strengthen connections across E3G with UK sustainable finance work.
  • Experience with working in Parliament/ Parliamentary outreach is desirable.
  • Experience with organising and supporting events is desirable.
