London Assembly and secretariat

The London Assembly is the body within the Greater London Authority that scrutinises the Mayor's work and investigates issues of importance to Londoners. Its 25 Assembly Members are elected every four years, at the same time as the Mayor.

About The Role

The Assembly is looking for a talented policy researcher to join its dynamic scrutiny team, where you will be focused on enabling the Assembly to make informed and influential contributions to the process for developing Londons spatial development strategy, the London Plan.

Skills

We are looking for someone with experience in planning and regeneration policy, and strong research and analysis skills. You will be a source of expert advice and support for the Assembly and its staff, and be responsible for leading on a wide range of analytical and policy development tasks, which may include:

Producing briefings for Assembly Members explaining complex issues

Writing outputs for the Assembly such as reports and consultation responses

Analysing datasets and producing visualisations

Researching policy issues and conducting literature reviews

Representing the Assembly in meetings with GLA officers or other stakeholders

Liaising with Assembly staff from other specialist areas such as housing, transport or the environment

In this role, you will be part of the Assemblys Research Unit, within the Scrutiny & Investigation team. The Scrutiny and Investigation team works with Assembly Members to deliver their scrutiny priorities, providing advice and briefing, engaging with stakeholders and producing Assembly outputs.

The Research Unit provides a specialised research and analysis service for the team, as well as publishing background papers on London government and key policy issues. This is a fantastic opportunity to lead scrutiny work in an area of huge importance to Assembly Members and to Londons future. The Mayors London Plan will set the direction for the capitals development for years to come, and the Assembly has a vital role to play in helping to ensure it reflects the needs and priorities of Londoners.

This role is being offered as a two-year, fixed-term contract. We are open to candidates who wish to undertake the role as a secondment, which may be for less than the full two-year duration if necessary.

This job is politically restricted under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989.

This role will be based at City Hall, in the Royal Docks (Kamal Chunchie Way, London, E16 1ZE).

Skills, Knowledge And Experience

To be considered for the role you must meet the following essential criteria:

  • Proven experience of working on planning and/or regeneration policy.
  • Knowledge and understanding of political, policy and governance issues relating to London and the UK more widely.
  • Experience of successfully developing policy and/or leading a programme of policy projects.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills with experience of gathering data and information from varied sources and drawing conclusions.
  • Strong communication skills, with experience of writing a variety of outputs setting out arguments clearly and convincingly.
  • Degree or equivalent experience.

Benefits

GLA staff are hybrid working up to 3 days a week in our offices and remotely depending on their role. As part of this, you will need to split your time between home working and coming into the office.
