Job summary

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the United Kingdom is seeking a Senior Platform Engineer specializing in Virtualisation, Windows, and security to join the Time & Frequency department on a fixed-term 12-month contract. You will design, deploy, administer and optimise virtualisation platforms, end-user computing solutions and supporting infrastructure, with a focus on automation and DevOps.

You will work across multiple customer environments, travel to sites as required, and contribute

Qualifications

• Experience designing, deploying, administering VMware environments (ESXi, vCenter, vSAN).
• Experience administering Windows Server in enterprise environments (AD, GPO, PKI).
• Experience supporting VDI environments.
• Strong scripting and automation using PowerShell, Ansible, Bash, Python, or Terraform.
• Ability to design, implement, and support secure, resilient, highly available systems.
• Experience producing technical documentation/runbooks and implementation plans.
• Strong stakeholder management, communication and engagement skills.
• Senior infrastructure/platform engineering experience or technical consultancy.
• Desirable certifications in VMware, Microsoft or automation technologies.

Responsibilities

• Administering, maintaining, and optimising VMware vCenter and vSAN environments.
• Supporting and developing VDI platforms.
• Managing Windows Server environments, including Active Directory, Trusts, DNS, GPO, PKI and security hardening.
• Designing, implementing, and supporting resilient, highly available infrastructure solutions.
• Delivering upgrades, migrations, patching and lifecycle management.
• Developing automation and orchestration using scripting and IaC.
• Supporting enterprise security initiatives, including privileged access management, monitoring and logging.
• Producing technical documentation and support runbooks.
• Contributing to disaster recovery and business continuity planning.
• Travelling to sites as required to support deployment and operations.
