Job summary

Permutable is hiring a Senior Platform Engineer to own the infrastructure behind our market intelligence platform. You will shape architecture decisions, work with the founder and engineering team, and build systems for real-time, event-driven processing.

You’ll manage AWS infrastructure, Python services, and AI workloads across distributed workflows, with a focus on reliability, monitoring and scalable deployments in production.

Qualifications

• Hands-on platform engineering or distributed backend experience in production systems.
• Experience designing and operating services on AWS with trade-off explanations.
• Strong Python engineering skills for production services or data processing.
• Experience with event-driven architectures, messaging, queues and distributed workflows.
• Practical experience with containers, IaC and CI/CD; Pulumi or Terraform welcome.
• Understanding of databases and observability to diagnose production issues.

Responsibilities

Job description

London, Vauxhall | Hybrid: at least three days in the office each week

Permutable builds market intelligence and systematic signals for financial institutions from continuously arriving global news, market and proprietary data.

We’re hiring a Senior Platform Engineer to take responsibility for the infrastructure behind those systems and help move our platform from scheduled pipelines towards real-time, event-driven processing.

You’ll work directly with our founder and engineering team, making architecture decisions and building the systems that put them into production. The work spans AWS infrastructure, Python services, distributed workflows and reliability, with increasing demands from our NLP, LLM and quantitative model workloads.

What you’ll work on

• Develop our production platform. Build and operate reliable infrastructure across AWS, using EKS/ECS, Docker, RDS/PostgreSQL and S3.
• Move processing towards real time. Design services and workflows using queues, messaging and asynchronous processing, with clear approaches to retries, failure recovery and state management.
• Build infrastructure for AI workflows. Support task execution, model routing and agent workflows that need to run reliably in production.
• Improve deployment and reliability. Manage infrastructure through Pulumi, automate deployments with GitHub Actions, and strengthen monitoring, logging, tracing and alerting.
• Support demanding model workloads. Work with our AI engineers on production NLP, LLM and quantitative systems, including our in-house GPU infrastructure.

What you’ll bring

• Substantial hands-on experience in platform engineering, SRE, infrastructure or distributed backend engineering, including responsibility for production systems.
• Strong AWS experience: you have designed, deployed and operated services, and can explain the trade-offs behind your decisions.
• Strong Python engineering skills, including building and maintaining production services or data-processing systems.
• Experience with event-driven architectures, messaging, queues and distributed workflows.
• Practical experience with containers, infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD. Terraform or equivalent experience is welcome alongside Pulumi.
• A solid understanding of databases and observability, with the ability to diagnose difficult production problems.
• The judgement to prioritise work, make architecture decisions and follow them through in a small engineering team.

Experience with Airflow, real-time data platforms, AI/ML infrastructure, LLM agents, GPUs or financial-market systems would be useful. You do not need experience with every tool in our stack.

• Influence the architecture. Help decide how our platform evolves as we move towards real-time processing and more complex AI workflows.
• Stay close to the engineering. Work directly with the founder and engineers, with responsibility from design through deployment.
• See your work used in production. Build infrastructure supporting market intelligence and signals for institutional financial clients.
• Work across data and AI systems. Tackle the reliability and scaling challenges created by continuously arriving data and production model workloads.
• We work together in our Vauxhall office at least three days each week.
