Job summary

Ably is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the Backoffice Platform in London, with remote work options across the UK. You’ll own a critical platform used for entitlements, billing, and admin tooling, collaborating with Finance, CS, and Support teams.

You’ll lead design decisions, champion AI-assisted development, and ensure the system is observable, well-tested, and scalable. Join a hands-on team shaping the next generation of real-time infrastructure.

Qualifications

• Experience working in large, established codebases and the judgement to know when to extend, rework, or replace a system.
• Ability to shape architecture inside a system you inherited, including data ownership decisions associated with boundaries.
• Self-starter who can work through ambiguity and push back when a process change is needed rather than just code.
• AI-first mindset; using LLMs and AI tools as productivity multipliers with strong engineering rigor.
• Experience making systems observable and testable, with a defined test strategy for patchy coverage.

Responsibilities

• Run the back office platform. You’ll look after the systems holding every customer’s packages, entitlements, limits and billing, plus the tooling used daily by Finance, CS, and Support.
• Solve problems, not tickets. You’ll own the design and delivery for problems described by users, not just pre-defined tickets.
• Make admin work for the people who use it. Users should see what a customer bought, how they’re billed, and what limits apply, and be able to change things confidently.
• Partner across the company. Finance, CS, Support and Engineering are all your users; learn processes to question requirements.
• Champion AI-assisted development. Use LLMs and AI tools for planning, spikes, code and docs to accelerate velocity while preserving correctness and architecture.
• Make the systems explain themselves. Your tooling should answer why limits exist and why a bill was produced without digging into code.
• Set the testing bar. Define what good looks like, build harnesses, and enforce production readiness.
