Job summary

Trainline is seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to join the Atlas Infrastructure Engineering and Tooling team. You will build scalable, secure infrastructure and automate delivery across AWS, Terraform, Node.js and Python.

You’ll collaborate with engineers and tech leads to shape plans and ensure reliable production deployments. Hybrid work in London, with at least 60% office presence; you’ll work across Terraform, AWS, and CI/CD pipelines while applying secure-by-default principles and

Qualifications

• Substantial professional experience as a software engineer, coding in Python, Node.js or C# and related languages.
• Strong grounding in software engineering best practices, producing clean, maintainable and testable code.
• Hands-on experience with AWS services like ECS, Lambda, CloudFront, IAM & S3, with security and operations best practices.
• Experience delivering infrastructure with Terraform or other IaC tools.
• Solid understanding of DevOps, CI/CD (e.g., GitHub Actions) and automated delivery.
• Experience using AI tooling to assist coding, reviews or research.
• Experience delivering results in agile, delivery‑focused teams and supporting peers through feedback.
• Curious mindset with ability to learn new technologies quickly.

Responsibilities

• Deliver complex improvements to Trainline's engineering platforms, building scalable, reliable and secure infrastructure.
• Implement and evolve infrastructure with Terraform, following module patterns and improving quality, maintainability and automation.
• Apply least-privilege and secure-by-default principles across AWS accounts and meet security/operational standards.
• Build and improve automation, services and tooling in Node.js or Python to speed up delivery and repeatability.
• Support and review the work of other engineers, providing context and constructive feedback.
• Collaborate with Tech Leads and cross-functional stakeholders to shape delivery plans and dependencies.
• Raise risks and blockers early to keep delivery moving at a sustainable pace.
• Test, validate and deploy infrastructure changes through CI/CD pipelines with robust documentation.

Introducing the Trainline Infrastructure Engineering and Tooling Team

The Infrastructure Engineering and Tooling team, also known as Atlas, owns the ecosystem we use to deploy, run and manage services across the Trainline platform. Our work helps engineering teams across the business ship changes safely and confidently, so millions of travellers can rely on Trainline every day.

You’ll join a collaborative team of software and platform engineers at all levels of experience. We work across Terraform, AWS, Node.js, C# and Python, and we don't expect you to know it all from day one. You’ll work closely with engineers, Tech Leads, Engineering Managers, a Senior Principal Engineer and the Head of Engineering to improve our platform, shape delivery and deliver meaningful infrastructure change.

In this role as the Senior Platform Engineer, you will

• Deliver complex improvements to Trainline's engineering platforms, building scalable, reliable and secure infrastructure that supports teams across the business.
• Implement and evolve infrastructure with Terraform, following existing module patterns while spotting opportunities to improve quality, maintainability and automation.
• Apply least-privilege and secure-by-default principles consistently across our AWS accounts, ensuring our infrastructure meets Trainline's standards for security and operational excellence.
• Build and improve automation, services and tooling in Node.js or Python to make delivery faster, safer and more repeatable.
• Support and review the work of other engineers, sharing context and giving constructive feedback so they can deliver with confidence.
• Work with Tech Leads, Delivery Managers and cross-functional stakeholders to shape delivery plans, meet milestones and manage dependencies.
• Raise risks, blockers and quality concerns early, helping to remove obstacles for the team and keep delivery moving at a sustainable pace.
• Test, validate and deploy infrastructure changes through CI/CD (continuous integration and continuous delivery) pipelines, making sure everything is robust, well documented and ready for production.

We'd love to hear from you if you have

• Substantial professional experience as a software engineer, writing code in Python, Node.js, C# or a similar programming language.
• A solid knowledge of software engineering best practice, with a focus on writing clean, maintainable and testable code.
• Hands‑on experience with AWS services such as ECS, Lambda, CloudFront, IAM and S3, applying operational and security best practice.
• A history of delivering infrastructure with Terraform or another infrastructure as code tool.
• A confident understanding of DevOps practices and CI/CD, for example using GitHub Actions.
• Experience using AI tooling in your day‑to‑day work, for example for coding, code review, research and productivity.
• Experience of delivering results in agile, delivery‑focused teams, and ideally of supporting colleagues through reviews and feedback.
• A curious mindset and the ability to pick up new technologies quickly and apply them effectively.
