Do you have a passion for Geographic Information Systems (GIS), enjoy working with spatial data, and want to play a key role in shaping the future of North Yorkshire?We're looking for a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our Planning Operations team as a Senior Planning Assistant, specialising in GIS, spatial data improvement, and Local Land Charges.

About the Role

As a Senior Planning Assistant, you will play a key role in supporting the delivery of planning and property-related services across North Yorkshire. Working within a specialist team, you will provide technical expertise in the management, maintenance, and application of GIS and Local Land Charges data.

You will support customers, colleagues, and external organisations by ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant information is available to inform decision-making, while helping to improve the quality and accessibility of our spatial and property-related data.

Our Service

The Council's Planning Services play a fundamental role in managing the natural and built environment, ensuring that future development needs can be accommodated to make North Yorkshire a better place in which to live and work.

The Operations Team provides a range of specialist technical services across Planning, Building Control, Land Charges, Street Naming and Numbering, GIS and data management. Through the use of technology, spatial information and strong technical knowledge, the team supports service delivery across one of the largest local authority areas in England.

The Role

As a Senior Planning Assistant specialising in GIS and LandCharges, you will be responsible for maintaining and analysing spatial data,supporting mapping-based services and assisting with the delivery of Local LandCharges functions. You will work closely with colleagues across PlanningServices and other Council departments to ensure data accuracy, legislativecompliance and excellent customer service.

The role requires strong technical skills, attention todetail and the ability to manage a varied workload within a busy andcustomer-focused environment.

Key Responsibilities

A Senior Planning Assistant within GIS and Land Charges will be expected to:

  • Maintainand manage GIS datasets, mapping systems and associated records.
  • Providemapping and spatial analysis to support Planning Services and wider Councilfunctions.
  • Assistin the administration and processing of Local Land Charges enquiries andsearches.
  • Supportthe maintenance, validation and quality assurance of land and property-relateddata.
  • Producemapping outputs, reports and spatial information for internal and externalcustomers.
  • Investigateand resolve complex data and mapping queries.
  • Liaisewith internal services, legal representatives, property professionals andexternal organisations.
  • Ensureinformation is maintained in accordance with relevant legislation, regulationsand service standards.
  • Contributeto service improvement initiatives and business process reviews.
  • Supportprojects involving GIS, digital systems, data management and recordsimprovement.Assist in developing guidance, procedures andtraining materials and provide support to colleagues where required.
What You Will Bring

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • Experienceworking with GIS, mapping systems or spatial data management.
  • Experienceof working within local government, planning, property, land charges or arelated technical environment.
  • Strongattention to detail and a commitment to data accuracy and quality.
  • Experienceusing electronic document management systems and business applications.
  • Theability to analyse information and solve complex technical queries.
  • Excellentorganisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads and meetdeadlines.
  • Strongcommunication and customer service skills.
  • Theability to work collaboratively within a team while managing your ownresponsibilities.
  • Aproactive approach to identifying and implementing service improvements.
  • Experienceof Local Land Charges processes.
  • Knowledgeof GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro or equivalent mapping platforms.
  • Understandingof planning legislation and property-related information systems.
  • Experienceof managing or interpreting land and property datasets.
  • Experiencesupporting colleagues through training, coaching or knowledge sharing.
