Job summary

Butler Rose Ltd in Halifax is seeking a Senior Payroll Specialist to own a portfolio of payroll clients and work alongside an established colleague. You will manage payroll from start to finish, ensuring accuracy and compliance, with a view to growing the dedicated payroll function.

The role involves handling varied payrolls for SME clients, collaborating closely with the existing payroll specialist, and contributing to the service’s ongoing development within the practice.

Are you an experienced payroll professional looking for a role where you can take ownership of your own portfolio, work alongside an established payroll colleague and become a key part of a growing accountancy practice?

We are working exclusively with an established and growing accountancy practice in Halifax who are looking to strengthen their payroll function with an experienced Senior Payroll Specialist.

The practice already has a dedicated payroll specialist in place and is now looking for another strong payroll professional to work alongside them. The aim is to create a dedicated payroll team that can take ownership of the firms payroll portfolio, allowing the wider practice team to focus on their own areas of expertise.

This is a hands‑on role for someone who knows payroll well, is comfortable managing their own workload and enjoys working directly with clients.

THE ROLE

You will manage your own portfolio of payroll clients, taking responsibility for the payroll process from start to finish and ensuring everything is accurate, compliant and delivered within agreed deadlines.

The existing payroll service looks after around 120 payrolls across a varied client base, including weekly, monthly, quarterly and payrolls processed on specific dates.

The largest payrolls are around 30 employees, with the majority being smaller SME businesses.

Working alongside the existing payroll specialist, you will share knowledge, support each other across the portfolio and help establish a strong, dedicated payroll function within the practice.

Payroll has traditionally been an additional service offered alongside the firms wider accountancy services.

As the practice continues to grow, there is scope for the payroll service to develop alongside it, making this an opportunity to have a genuine influence on how the function evolves.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Managing your own portfolio of payroll clients from start to finish
• Processing weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual payrolls
• Ensuring payrolls are accurate and completed within agreed deadlines

• Dealing directly with client payroll queries
• Maintaining accurate payroll records
• Working closely with the existing payroll specialist
• Supporting colleagues within the wider practice where required

ABOUT YOU

Were looking for someone with strong, hands‑on payroll experience who is confident managing their own portfolio and working independently.

You could currently be working within an accountancy practice, payroll bureau or in industry, and practice experience is not essential provided you are comfortable managing multiple payrolls and working across a varied portfolio.

Ideally, you'll have experience using Sage Payroll, although strong experience with alternative payroll systems will also be considered.

You’ll be organised, dependable and detail-focused, with the confidence to deal directly with clients and take ownership of your work.

Just as importantly, you'll enjoy working collaboratively as part of a small team.

This would suit someone who enjoys the technical and practical side of payroll but also wants to be part of a team where their contribution is genuinely valued.
