Job summary

Imperium Resourcing is recruiting a Payroll Manager to lead a large, complex payroll service in a London Local Authority. The role oversees 6,500 salaries and 8,000 monthly pension payments, ensuring accuracy, timeliness and compliance with HMRC and internal controls.

You will act as the payroll expert, advising on PAYE, tax and pensions, and deputising for the Head of Service when required. Experience within Local Government is highly desirable.

Qualifications

• Experience leading a large payroll operation.
• Strong knowledge of PAYE, tax, National Insurance and pensions.
• Experience interpreting complex payroll legislation and terms and conditions.
• Proven team management and performance management experience.
• Experience managing payroll across large scales with audits and controls.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the payroll function, including senior staff.
• Ensure monthly payroll and pension payments are accurate and delivered on time.
• Provide specialist advisory on payroll legislation and regulatory reporting.
• Maintain payroll controls, reconciliations and audit processes.
• Identify payroll errors and implement corrective actions.
• Support implementation of new payroll technology and service improvements.
• Manage budgets, SLAs and payroll-related service performance.
• Collaborate with HR, Finance and external agencies.
