Leonardo UK Ltd is seeking an experienced Production Support Electronics Engineer to join the Electronics team in Edinburgh. The role is mainly based at the Edinburgh site, with 3 to 5 days per week on-site.

You will diagnose hardware issues, support NPI, and work across multiple engineering disciplines to sustain product quality and drive improvements. The ideal candidate will have a strong electronics background, fault-finding skills, and experience in technical support roles.

Qualifications

  • A degree or equivalent in Electronics or related engineering field.
  • Strong knowledge of electronic circuits and PCB processes.
  • Solid diagnosis and troubleshooting of analogue, digital, and power circuits.

Responsibilities

  • Analyse and diagnose electronics failures and identify root causes.
  • Escalate critical faults to ensure timely resolution.
  • Collaborate with design and other engineering disciplines to resolve issues.
  • Provide detailed problem-resolution reports to management and customers.
  • Support transition of new laser products to production and address circuit-board issues.
  • Contribute to feedback on manufacturability, testability, and cost Reduction.

We are looking for an experiencedProduction Support Electronics Engineer to join the Electronics team inLeonardo’s Advanced Targeting Sector in Edinburgh and we are interested in applicants with a range of hardware experience levels, to be an Senior Engineer or Principal Engineers, with the level of appointment matched to your experience, technical depth and leadership capability. All of these roles are based at Leonardo’s Edinburgh site. Due to the nature of the work, the roles are expected to be primarily site-based, typically around 3 to 5 days per week working at the Edinburgh site, although this may ebb and flow depending on the tasks, investigations, test campaigns and project needs.

Advanced Targeting is an area that has a number of significant growth opportunities due to a strong pipeline of work. This position looking to fill a vacancy on theElectro-Optics Product Support Team which is responsible for new product introduction (NPI) as well as providing technical assistance and troubleshooting for our world-class laser and infra-red countermeasure products. This is not a narrow production support role. You will be involved in fault investigation, product upgrades, design changes, test improvement, qualification testing, obsolescence resolution and defect reduction. You will work closely with Operations and cross-functionally with Electronics, Mechanical, Systems, Software, Firmware and Test Engineering, as well as Supply Chain, Quality and Project Management.

The role involves diagnosing hardware issues, handling customer queries and collaborating with internal teams to maintain and improve product quality. You will work closely alongside our Quality, Design and Manufacturing groups, as well as developing close collaborative relationships with our key supply chain partners. The ideal candidate should possess solid knowledge of electronics, problem-solving skills, and experience in technical support roles.

As a Senior or Principal Production Support Electronic Engineer you will:
  • Analyse and diagnose electronics failures on our laser products, identifying root cause and recommending corrective action.
  • Manage escalation of critical pattern faults to ensure timely resolution.
  • Liaise with design teams and other engineering disciplines to resolve complex issues that require cross-functional input.
  • Provide detailed reports to management and customers on problem resolution efforts.
  • Manage any emerging component obsolescence issues.
  • Work alongside our supply chain to ensure smooth transition to rate production for new laser products (NPI).
  • Liaise with supply chain to support them in resolving emerging circuit board production issues.
  • Ensure that our supply chain have robust and effective board-level test solutions.
  • Provide feedback on product manufacturability, testability and cost reduction and other potential improvements based on field data.
  • You will receive technical and personal developmental support from recognised industry experts in the fields on electro-optics and defence avionics.
  • Training will be delivered via a combination of on-the-job experience working alongside subject matter experts with many decades of experience, plus additional formal technical training delivered via taught courses depending on the business needs.
What you’ll bring

We are looking for engineers who are pragmatic, technically curious and comfortable working close to the product. You will bring:

  • A degree, HND/HNC or equivalent experience in Electronics, Hardware Engineering, RF Engineering, Systems Engineering, Test Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline.
  • Good understanding of electronic circuits, and awareness of PCB manufacturing processes.
  • Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills and de-bugging of analogue, digital and power circuits.
  • Good practical laboratory skills, including operation of standard electronics test equipment (oscilloscopes, multi-meters, power supplies).
  • Strong team-working and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • The ability to make sound engineering judgements in a timely manner.
  • A practical understanding of complex hardware products, production test, design verification or product sustainment.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively across engineering and non-engineering teams.
  • A proactive, self-starting approach and the tenacity to drive problems through to resolution.
It would be nice if you had

Experience in one or more of the following would be beneficial:

  • Experience with any of the following technologies: Military Avionics, Electro-Optics, Lasers, Power Electronics.
  • Familiarity or experience with FRACAS, RCCA, Five Why’s, FMEA.
  • Knowledge of electronics manufacturing standards, e.g. IPC-A-610.
  • Knowledge of product configuration management tools.
  • Awareness of electronic manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with Siemens Xpedition, or similar ECAD toolsets.
  • Automatic test equipment, production test systems, diagnostics or test coverage improvement.

This is not an exhaustive list, and we are keen to hear from you even if you might not have experience in all the above. The most important skill is a good attitude and willingness to learn.
