Job description

Job Description: Your impact Do you enjoy solving complex engineering problems, getting close to the product, and seeing the direct impact of your decisions? We are looking for Production Support Electronic Engineers to join our expanding Surveillance Radar engineering team in Edinburgh and we are interested in applicants with a range of hardware experience levels, to be Engineer, Senior Engineer or Principal Engineers. We welcome applicants from Engineer through to Principal Engineer level, with the level of appointment matched to your experience, technical depth and leadership capability. All of these roles are based at Leonardo’s Edinburgh site. Due to the nature of the work, the roles are expected to be primarily site-based, typically around 4 to 5 days per week working at the Edinburgh site, although this may ebb and flow depending on the tasks, investigations, test campaigns and project needs. You will support the production and sustainment of Leonardo’s Osprey and Seaspray Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Airborne Surveillance Radar products, working on complex hardware across multiple radar variants and Line Replaceable Units (LRUs). This is not a narrow production support role. You will be involved in fault investigation, product upgrades, design changes, test improvement, qualification testing, obsolescence resolution and defect reduction. You will work closely with Operations and cross-functionally with Electronics, Mechanical, Systems, Software, Firmware and Test Engineering, as well as Supply Chain, Quality and Project Management. This is a great opportunity to join a growing business area, work with technically challenging products, and be part of a supportive team with strong autonomy, technical breadth and development opportunities.

What you’ll bring

We are looking for engineers who are pragmatic, technically curious and comfortable working close to the product.

  • A degree, HND/HNC or equivalent experience in Electronics, Hardware Engineering, RF Engineering, Systems Engineering, Test Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience solving technical problems in a structured and evidence-based way.
  • Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills.
  • The ability to make sound engineering judgements in a timely manner.
  • A practical understanding of complex hardware products, production test, design verification or product sustainment.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively across engineering and non-engineering teams.
  • A proactive, self-starting approach and the tenacity to drive problems through to resolution.

Experience in one or more of the following would be beneficial:

  • Production support, product support, sustainment engineering or manufacturing engineering support.
  • Radar, RF, microwave, high-speed digital, analogue electronics or complex electro-mechanical systems, firmware, software or embedded systems interfaces.
  • RF experience is valuable, but we are equally interested in engineers with strong diagnostic instincts, production awareness and a track record of solving difficult technical problems.
  • AESA radar products or airborne surveillance systems.
  • Automatic test equipment, production test systems, diagnostics or test coverage improvement.
  • Root cause analysis methods and corrective action processes.
  • Design change, configuration control or engineering change processes.
  • Component obsolescence assessment and alternative component/material evaluation.
  • Environmental or qualification testing, such as thermal, vibration, EMC, or testing to RTCA DO-160 or similar standards.
  • Experience supporting products through production ramp-up, maturity improvement, defect reduction or long-term sustainment.

This is not an exhaustive list, and we are keen to hear from you even if you might not have experience in all the above. The most important skill is a good attitude and willingness to learn.
