Job summary

Optos is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its Optomechanical team in Dunfermline. You will design and develop advanced optomechanical systems for retinal imaging, leading concept development, detailed design, prototyping and validation with cross-functional teams.

You will apply CAD, GD&T and tolerance analysis, manage small projects, conduct FMEA, and support manufacturing transitions while mentoring junior engineers and contributing to design controls and regulatory

Qualifications

• Degree-level education in mechanical or optomechanical engineering.
• Extensive experience in mechanical design of complex multi-component systems.
• Experience designing and integrating motors and precision motion systems.
• Advanced CAD, GD&T, tolerance analysis and PLM documentation control.
• Experience interpreting simulation results and applying DFM principles across manufacturing methods.
• Strong background in thermal management using simulation tools.
• Leadership and mentoring of junior engineers.
• Ability to manage small projects and deliver high-quality outputs on tight deadlines.
• Root-cause analysis, verification testing and design-control compliance.
• Cross-functional collaboration with suppliers and other teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead concept development and system-level mechanical design.
• Develop innovative designs to solve complex challenges.
• Produce, review, and approve drawings, BOMs, and PLM documentation.
• Manage small projects with on-time delivery.
• Drive continuous improvement across product designs and engineering practices.
• Support prototype build, testing, and transition to product/clinical environments.
• Analyze and report experimental results to guide design decisions.
• Apply CAD, GD&T and tolerance analysis for robust designs.
• Lead design reviews, FMEA, verification testing, and regulatory compliance.
• Collaborate with suppliers and mentor junior engineers.
