About the role

Balfour Beatty is currently recruiting a Senior OHL Design Engineer to join the Power T&D team in Derby.

We need your help designing over 800km of secured OHL new build and refurb projects. That’s nearly 14,000km of conductor, 24,000 insulator sets, 5000 foundations and whopping 38,000 tonnes of new steel.

We are open to both full time and part time candidates (including job share), and offer a flexible working policy.

What you'll be doing

Your job will be to perform and lead the design delivery of OHL projects up to 400kV, from tendering to project handover. As well as delivering projects in compliance with industry standards, customer requirements and Balfour Beatty Governance.

Day to day you can expect to:

- Act as the OHL Lead Designer, responsible for delivery of tender deliverables and the OHL scopes of projects, including the coordination of relevant resources.

- Act as a Senior Design Engineer

- Produce OHL deliverables for projects such as Sag Ten, Profiling, Clearance Reports, Mechanical Utilisation Reports, Short Circuit Loading, construction phase design support (i.e. backstays, CSS, Spacer trolley checks, scaffold checks, EMF studies, sag adjuster setting calculations)

- Identify and ensure design compliance with all relevant standards, legislations, customer requirements, and contract specifications throughout the project life cycle.

- Review tender and contract documentation and establish OHL scope of works.

- Review, checking and approval of all required designs.

- Collaborate with designers from other disciplines within the business

- Practise Safety and Sustainability by design on all projects

- Support and work on the resolution of design challenges

- Deliver scope of works to programme, budget and quality

- Interface with other stakeholders for project delivery

- Follow document management procedures

- Train, mentor and coach junior colleagues

Who we're looking for

The required skills are:

- Degree level education (or equivalent) in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.

- Understanding of OHL design, with extensive experience as an OHL Design Engineer

- Understanding of UK and European design codes and standards for the industry (SSE, National Grid, ENA Technical Specifications, BS EN 50341, and IEC Standards)

- Good knowledge of PLS CADD

- Proficient user of Microsoft Office

- Desire to work towards Chartered Engineer, if not already doing so
