Job overview

St Mary's Hospital is an internationally recognised centre for vascular surgery and the only centre in the UK currently providing endo-robotic surgery for aortic, carotid and peripheral vascular interventions; as well as providing open thoracoabdominal aneurysm repair using techniques such as left heart bypass and full motor and sensory spinal monitoring.

We are developing into a National centre and North West London Hub for Vascular Surgery so receive patients for complex vascular treatment from all over the London and the UK.

We require a highly specialised and skilled Band 7 Occupational Therapist, to work within the surgery team, alongside a Band 7 in T&O. The ideal candidate will have previous experience working in the areas of vascular surgery, plastic, trauma, orthopaedic, and general surgery. They will support and manage a complex caseload, using advanced clinical reasoning, critical thinking, reflection and analysis.

This post will develop experience in wheelchair assessments, comprehensive complex equipment assessments, home access visits, adaptation of ADLs following upper and lower limb amputations.

We conduct acute rehab following surgery and coordination of client centred discharge planning within post-surgical restrictions, capacity complications and socio-environmental concerns. They will be supported by the Clinical Lead Therapist to develop and enhance their leadership and clinical management skills to manage a small team of occupational therapists.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will be responsible for performing advanced assessment of patients with diverse presentations and complex medical, physical and psychological conditions, to develop and deliver an individualised management/treatment programme.
  • Following assessment the post holder will be responsible for making therapeutic and/or clinical diagnoses and treating their own caseload of specialised and complex patients/clients and maintaining associated records.
  • The post holder may lead a team and be responsible for providing an advanced standard of care to patients at Imperial College NHS Healthcare Trust, which covers a multi-cultural and diverse population.
  • The post holder will supervise the work of other more junior staff and support workers.
  • The post holder may be rotational and will be expected to work across all sites of the ICHNT.
  • The post holder will assist the Clinical Lead in contributing to the planning, coordination, development and evaluation of the service.
  • Together with other senior staff, you will act as a resource of specialist advice to the rest of the therapy service and other professions.

Essential criteria

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Occupational Therapy
  • State registration with the Health Professions Council
  • Evidence of CPD through maintenance of a portfolio, especially in the relevant clinical area
  • Clinical Educators course or equivalent

Desirable criteria

  • Membership of the Professional Organisation
  • Membership of Professional special interest groups relevant to speciality
  • Relevant Postgraduate clinical qualification
  • Management skills or leadership training

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Significant recent clinical experience in relevant clinical area
  • Evidence of a broad base of clinical experience at Band 6 level or equivalent
  • Significant experience of working as an integral member of a multidisciplinary team and inter-agency working
  • Experience of multidisciplinary goal planning, development of care pathways and using outcome measures
  • Experience of organising and implementing training programmes for therapists, MDT members, support workers, students and apprentices
  • Experience of service development/change management
  • Experience in implementing evidence based practice in speciality
  • Experience of on-call and weekend working in an acute hospital (if required for job role)

Desirable criteria

  • Previous Band 7 or equivalent experience in relevant post
