If you are ready to be a Senior Nuclear Safety Engineer, then we would love you to join our team. We are looking for people with strong technical and communication skills, who thrive in solving complex nuclear and defence safety problems and enjoy working in multidisciplinary project teams. Your purpose:

Help us deliver major defence-related programmes across the UK, including infrastructure design and construction, life extensions, upgrades, maintaining operations, and decommissioning. Your involvement will include safety case support such as:

  1. Shaping the nuclear safety case strategy.
  2. Collaborating with project partners for safety-informed design.
  3. Engaging stakeholders for ‘Right First Time’ delivery.
  4. Conducting safety assessments and analyses.
  5. Producing safety reports and technical documents.

While based in Bristol, Manchester, Aldershot, Silchester, or Glasgow, flexibility to work at client sites is required.

Responsibilities:

Provide safety case support throughout the design and operational lifecycle, ensuring compliance with Licence and Authorization Conditions. Lead technical activities such as:

  1. Hazard and Fault Identification Studies (e.g., HAZID, HAZOP, FMEA).
  2. Qualitative and Quantitative Hazard Analyses.
  3. Radiological Hazard Assessments.
  4. Safety Case Report production (e.g., PSR, PCSR).
  5. ALARP Assessments.
  6. Support Engineering Substantiation activities.
  7. Engage with regulatory bodies (e.g., ONR, DNSR).
  8. Develop and review Safety Management Arrangements.
  9. Manage Safety Case teams and activities.

Additional expectations for a Senior Nuclear Safety Engineer:

  1. Mentor team members technically.
  2. Contribute to bids and proposals.
  3. Implement safety initiatives.
  4. Build networks within AtkinsRéalis, clients, and partners.

What you can bring:

  • Proven safety track record, ideally in defence/nuclear or regulated industries.
  • Readiness to advance your career with growth opportunities.

  • Interest in digital tools for nuclear safety.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for relationship building and team development.

In addition, demonstrate:

  • Honours Degree (or equivalent) in physics, mechanical engineering, or related field (2:1 min).
  • Chartered status or working towards it.
  • Technical expertise in Nuclear/Defence sectors with sound engineering judgment.
  • Excellent technical report writing skills.
  • Leadership experience in technical teams and mentoring juniors.
  • Motivation to meet delivery and cost targets without sacrificing quality.
  • Awareness of technical limitations and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Eligibility for Security Clearance.
