If you are ready to be a Senior Nuclear Safety Engineer, we would love you to join our team. We seek individuals with strong technical and communication skills, who thrive in solving complex nuclear and defence safety problems and enjoy working in multidisciplinary teams. Your purpose:

You will help us deliver major defence programmes across the UK, including infrastructure design and construction, life extensions, upgrades, operations, and decommissioning. Your involvement will include safety case support such as:

  • Shaping the nuclear safety case strategy
  • Collaborating with project partners for safety-informed design
  • Engaging stakeholders for ‘Right First Time’ delivery
  • Conducting safety assessments and analysis
  • Producing safety reports and technical documents

While your primary office locations will be Bristol, Manchester, Aldershot, Silchester, or Glasgow, flexibility in work location is essential, as our clients may require work at their sites.

Responsibilities:

You will provide safety case support throughout the design and operational lifecycle, ensuring compliance with Licence Conditions and/or Authorization Conditions. Your technical leadership will typically cover:

  • Hazard and Fault Identification Studies (e.g., HAZID, HAZOP, FMEA)
  • Qualitative and Quantitative Hazard Analysis
  • Radiological Hazard Assessments
  • Safety Case Report production (e.g., PSR, PCSR)
  • ALARP Assessments
  • Support for Engineering Substantiation
  • Liaison with regulatory bodies (e.g., ONR, DNSR)
  • Development and review of Safety Management Arrangements
  • Leading Safety Case activities and teams

As a Senior Nuclear Safety Engineer, you will also:

  • Mentor junior staff
  • Assist in bids and proposals
  • Implement safety initiatives
  • Build relationships within AtkinsRéalis, clients, and partners

  • Honours Degree (or equivalent) in physics, mechanical engineering, or related field (minimum 2:1)

  • Experience as a technical practitioner in Nuclear/Defence domains
  • Excellent report writing and review skills
  • Leadership experience in technical teams
  • Ability to meet delivery and cost targets
  • Eligibility for Security Clearance
