Job summary

The post holder will assist in the provision and delivery of the Nuclear Medicine service throughout UHL, rotating between the Leicester Royal Infirmary and Glenfield Hospital.
The post is one of a number in the Nuclear Medicine Division. Nuclear Medicine is responsible for the use of sealed and open sources of radioactivity in the provision of a diagnostic and therapeutic service for patients throughout Leicestershire.

The post holder is required to work to high standards of accuracy, safety and accountability, complying with relevant legislation.

The post holder liaises closely with a wide range of staff, patients and carers ensuring that complex, sensitive information is relayed in an appropriate and efficient manner ensuring understanding.

Job responsibilities

1. Participate in the delivery of a high quality Nuclear Medicine Service, using complex, sophisticated imaging, non-imaging and data processing equipment, ensuring that all procedures are carried out according to written procedures and guidelines.
2. Uses complex image processing software to produce images, curves and data for interpretation being able to adapt the processing for non-routine information.
3. Book patients in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.
4. To assist in the amendment, and writing, of protocols and workflows used in imaging procedures and data processing.
5. Participate in the programme of quality control for complex Nuclear Medicine equipment as directed by the Head of Nuclear Medicine.
6. To prepare, dispense and administer radiopharmaceuticals and allied pharmaceuticals for Nuclear Medicine procedures, including the consent and counselling of patients receiving radioactive substances.
7. Participate in the programmes of: product quality control, environmental monitoring, plus cleaning and maintenance of equipment, clothing and work areas according to written procedures.
8. Ensure that stock levels are monitored and maintained, and that all documentation relating to the ordering and receipt of radiopharmaceuticals, and other materials, especially consumables and services are complete and accurate.
9. Ensure that all written procedures are adhered to, and take a pro-active role in the identification, development, implementation and monitoring of new or revised procedures in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and other Health Care Professionals.
10. Where applicable, to perform the Authorisation of Nuclear Medicine procedures on behalf of the IRMER certificate holder in accordance with Authorisation Criteria, ensuring that procedures are booked accordingly.
11. Ensure effective multidisciplinary communications across the Nuclear Medicine Service, Divisions and other Health Care Institutions.
12. Maintain and update own level of expert knowledge and participate in the education and development of junior and trainee staff assigned to the service.

Person Specification

Training and Qualifications

Essential

• BSc (Hons) Clinical technology or Radiography or equivalent.

Desirable

• Postgraduate Diploma in Nuclear Medicine Teaching qualification

Experience

Essential

• 3 years' experience in Nuclear Medicine

Desirable

• Experience in Radiopharmacy. Ability to carry out cell labelling. Experience of pharmacological cardiac stress testing. A paediatric qualification

• Able to communicate, both verbally and in writing, complex and sensitive information which requires empathy and reassurance where there are barriers to understanding.

• Have skills for assessing the appropriateness of diagnostic requests and authorise requests on behalf of the IRMER certificate holder.
