Position: Senior Network Engineer
Location: South Oxfordshire
On site: 5 days a week

Working with the Senior Network Administrator and IT Security Officer within our client's Scientific Computing group, the role involves co-developing the design, development, commissioning, and operational support of their science-facing network infrastructure. This includes current facility operations and key network upgrade and transformation projects. The responsibilities cover support, design, development, and operation of networking capabilities to ensure effective, dependable, and resilient operation of the client's accelerators, science beamlines, and data centre operations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Co-design and development of Diamond's Science Network infrastructure to support high-performance detectors, storage systems, and cluster services.
  • Provide network operations support and technical expertise within the Scientific Computing team on ad hoc and project basis.
  • Installation and configuration of network infrastructure using hardware from multiple vendors.
  • Root cause analysis, issue resolution, working with team members.
  • Software patching of network equipment to standard software versions.
  • Interfacing with internal teams and scientists to develop requirements, track progress, and verify operation of network infrastructure.
  • Reporting progress to the Operations Manager and Head of Scientific Computing.
  • Project planning, coordination, and implementation related to networks.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of network technologies to support and develop facility projects.
  • Documenting and communicating network developments within Diamond and other projects.
  • Network monitoring, reporting metrics, and dashboards for performance measurement.
  • Line management of junior network administrators as required.
  • Maintaining and updating DLS firewall appliances.

Skills and Experience:

  • Experience administering modern network infrastructure.
  • Configuring and troubleshooting protocols like PXE, DHCP, DNS, CIFS, and NFS.
  • Experience with high bandwidth hardware and network stack tuning on Windows/Linux.
  • Proficiency in Linux command line and scripting.
  • Experience operating and configuring firewalls and VPNs.
  • Designing and guiding deployment of fibre installs, routers, switches, and low latency interconnects like InfiniBand or OmniPath.
  • Degree in computing or science, or equivalent experience.
  • Relevant network certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, or WCNA.
