Job description

You’ll join the GOV.UK One Login programme as a Senior Android Developer, responsible for building and maintaining the GOV.UK One Login Android app, developed in Kotlin with XML layouts and Jetpack Compose, supporting Android 10 and above.

As a Senior Android App Developer, you will:

  • work within a multidisciplinary agile team, involved in all stages from user research to deployment
  • develop accessible Android apps, ensuring high code quality
  • create automated tests to ensure software quality
  • share knowledge with team members, both developers and non-developers
  • support live services and participate in out-of-hours support with appropriate compensation
  • assist in recruiting developers, including sifting and interviewing candidates
  • provide technical leadership and mentorship within the team
  • resolve complex technical issues

You will contribute to the digital transformation of the government, delivering high-quality code aligned with programme goals, working collaboratively in an agile environment, and challenging the status quo to improve government services.

Person specification

We are looking for candidates with:

  • experience in native Android development, proficient in Kotlin and familiar with Jetpack Compose
  • knowledge of Google Material Design Guidelines and experience publishing to Google Play
  • experience with modern development practices such as automated testing, TDD, CI, pair programming, code review, and version control
  • experience working collaboratively in agile, multidisciplinary teams

Senior Developers should also have:

  • experience mentoring others in modern development standards
  • management experience, including supporting career development and coaching junior staff
