Job summary

Babcock International Group is seeking a Senior Metallurgy and Materials Engineer to join our Devonport Royal Dockyard team in Plymouth. You will apply materials science to support safety, performance, and availability of naval assets, leading testing, failure investigations, and technical advice.

You will work on-site at Devonport, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and mentor junior staff while delivering high-quality outputs within a defence-focused environment.

Qualifications

• Experience in a UKAS-accredited laboratory performing mechanical testing and metallography.
• Expertise in corrosion inspection within nuclear-related systems.
• Experience authoring and reviewing test methods and reports.
• Strong understanding of safety legislation and data analysis.
• Defence sector experience and clear communication.

Responsibilities

• Lead testing, analysis, and failure investigations to ensure component integrity.
• Provide specialist advice on material selection, fabrication, and heat treatment.
• Manage testing programmes and collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams.
• Support QA through supplier audits and standards compliance.
• Mentor staff and contribute to continuous improvement.
