Job summary

As a Senior Medical Writer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the communication of complex scientific ideas. Taking leadership of large projects/specific workstreams across a range of medical communications deliverables, you will be responsible for the quality and scientific integrity of all outputs delivered by the team.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Develop high-quality, scientifically accurate, clear, fully referenced written materials tailored to the target audience, meeting client communication objectives and specifications. This includes interacting with key experts, negotiating content, and making constructive suggestions.
  • Create a broad range of materials including meeting materials (slides, agendas, discussion guides), post-meeting activities (webcasts, reports), attending meetings, workshops, advisory boards, newsletters, training materials, and publications.
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients and key experts.
  • Research medical and scientific topics using relevant sources.
  • Maintain knowledge in relevant therapy areas, including drug mechanisms, disease states, treatment guidelines, and the competitive landscape.
  • Participate in strategic projects and provide strategic counsel, insights, recommendations, and solutions to clients.
  • Follow all relevant guidelines and SOPs at personal and team levels.
  • Support accounts team and attend meetings such as internal kick-offs, status updates, and client calls.
  • Identify and address potential problems or resource limitations to ensure project delivery on time, within budget, and with quality.
  • Nurture client relationships and identify business development opportunities.
  • Contribute content for new business proposals and presentations.
  • Use relevant tools and databases (EndNote, DataVision, ZINC, etc.) proficiently.
  • Coach and mentor junior colleagues, providing feedback to Line Managers.
  • Submit accurate and timely timesheets.
  • Support line management and the career development of reports, ensuring performance reviews and objectives are in place, and address under-performance proactively.

Experience, skills, and qualifications

  • Experience as a Medical Writer in medcomms, healthcare agency, or pharma environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interpret and fulfill client briefs creatively and accurately.
  • Strong understanding of science, medicine, healthcare environment, and medical education/publication industry.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills and scientific/therapeutic/regulatory information.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and complete multiple tasks, adapting to changing project demands.
  • Manage workload effectively.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective communication and negotiation skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability.
  • Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, adhering to style guides (OPEN Health Medical Communications, client, or external publisher).
  • Understanding of the ABPI Code of Practice and familiarity with AMA editorial style and medical terminology.
  • Graduate in life sciences (biomedical, pharmacy, medicine), higher degree preferred.
  • Prior experience at Medical Writer level in a medical communications agency; knowledge of pharmaceutical marketing principles is a plus.
