Job description

Job Description

Are you a Mechanical Engineer, with a background in analysis and design of piping systems and pressure equipment, who thrives on difficult problems? Are you drawn to complex design projects and excited by the opportunity to rapidly move on to leadership positions, heading up projects and guiding junior engineers?

If so, you might enjoy solving the energy industry’s most important pressure equipment design conundrums across a variety of clients. You could be designing systems to provide cooling for safety-critical plant, emergency shutdown capability to nuclear reactors, qualifying pipework for high temperatures and pressures for fusion reactors, supporting UK Submarine and SMR programmes, or enabling renewable energy projects within a growing carbon net zero portfolio. You’ll likely be juggling several projects simultaneously, so being adaptable is essential! The constant is the complex nature of the jobs and the opportunity to provide innovative solutions for diverse clients.

Whichever energy-related projects you work on, you’ll be engaged in deploying collaborative solutions to ensure safe and reliable plants—contributing significantly to the safety of our future energy supply.

If you are a self-starter capable of managing multiple projects, working closely with clients and internal teams to understand requirements, set up projects, and deliver right-first-time solutions for challenging problems, we encourage you to apply.

Role requirements:

You will work within small to medium-sized multidisciplinary teams. To benefit from collective experience, our clients, and to foster innovative thinking, you’ll work in a collaborative and supportive office/site environment for at least half of your working week. You may also be based at client offices or plant sites. You should bring a level of commercial awareness to effectively deliver tasks across multiple workstreams, adhering to time, quality, and budget constraints.

Essential criteria:

  • Degree qualified mechanical engineer (or relevant qualification)
  • Experience in piping and pressure vessel design and stress analysis
  • Experience in writing detailed, accurate technical reports (e.g., design substantiations, analysis basis, safety case references)
  • Ability to engage with clients, understand their issues, goals, and processes, and work at their sites

Preferred experience (but not mandatory):

  • Experience in safety-critical and heavily regulated environments like nuclear power/decommissioning
  • Chartered status or nearing application with a relevant professional institute
  • Experience with design codes such as ASME BPVC Section III, RCC-M, BS EN 13480, BS EN 13445
  • Experience in automation tools, preferably in Python
  • Experience in requirements capture, task specification, and bid writing
  • Site support and installation supervision experience
  • PESR and PSSR compliance knowledge

Additional Information:

This role may require security clearance, contingent on UKSV vetting. Please do not mention security clearance in your application.
