Job summary

Leonardo is seeking Mechanical Engineers in the United Kingdom to contribute to the next generation of sensors and related products. You will work with talented engineers and scientists to tackle demanding challenges, applying structural, thermal and model-driven engineering throughout the lifecycle.

The role includes on-site Basildon attendance when required, with a flexible blend of remote work. You will develop manufacturing data packs, perform GD&T, and support design reviews while advancing

Qualifications

• Mechanical engineering degree or equivalent experience in Defence environments.
• Experience designing systems for harsh environments (shock, vibration, temperature, EMC, salt fog).
• Proficient in 3D CAD design using Creo or equivalent.
• Ability to solve problems with a structured, logical approach.
• Ability to interpret Structural and Thermal Analyses data to inform design decisions.
• Experience with Design for X including Manufacturing, Assembly, Test, Integration and Sustainability.

Responsibilities

• Deliver mechanical engineering solutions across the full engineering lifecycle with emphasis on quality, safety and reliability.
• Collaborate with senior peers to develop mechanical solutions for next-gen products.
• Produce manufacturing data packs in line with BS8888 and GD&T usage.
• Support technical investigations and contribute to design reviews.
• Involve in development builds, experiments and DT&E activities.
• Assist introduction of new products into development/production lifecycles.
• Contribute to work package delivery focusing on quality, schedule and cost.

The role will require novel approaches to overcome the demanding challenges set by our customers and will build on decades of domain leading heritage.

All members of the Mechanical Engineering Team are encouraged to continually develop their technical skills within structural, thermal and model driven engineering aspects of Mechanical Engineering.

This role allows a mixture of on-site and remote working; with attendance at our Basildon facility required when Customer requirements dictate.

What you'll bring

You will deliver compliance of Mechanical Engineering solutions through the entire Engineering Lifecycle, ensuring that the solutions consider all requirements including product quality, safety, reliability, etc. Mechanical Engineering detailed design; including numerical calculations, tolerance studies, etc.

You will support, and get support from, senior Peers in the delivery of mechanical solutions and techniques that enable the team to advance the next generation of product.

Producing Manufacturing Data Packs in line with BS8888, including appropriate use of GD&T.

Support to successful resolution of technical investigations.

Contributing to reviews of mechanical designs in accordance with business and industry standards.

Hands on involvement in practical implementation of development builds and Design of Experiments.

Providing support during the introduction of new product into the Development/Production lifecycle phase.

Actively contribute to Work Package delivery elements to achieve desired Quality, Schedule and Cost.

Essential Skills, Qualifications and Experience

• A degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar), or experience in the field of Defence (Airborne, naval, etc) environments. Mechanical engineering for Electronic and/or EO products
• Design of systems for 'harsh environments' i.e. Shock, Vibration, Temperature, EMC, Salt fog, etc.
• Mechanical design and development using 3D CAD tools (ideally PTC Creo).
• Problem solving using a structured, logical approach to investigate issues and problems in an effective manner.
• Understanding Structural and Thermal Analyses data, to inform design decisions.
• Experienced in various aspects of Design for X (DfX), including Manufacturing, Assembly, Test, Integration and Sustainability.
