Senior Mechanical Engineer

Location: Warrington

Type: Permanent

Purpose of the Job

We are seeking an experienced individual with extensive knowledge and practical application of mechanical engineering within highly regulated industry sectors.

The Senior Engineer defines and distributes the scope of work, ensuring project execution is safe, timely, and meets quality standards. They are responsible for delivering engineering solutions that align with technical specifications.

Additional responsibilities include supervising less experienced engineers, contributing to resource management, recruitment, and tendering support.

Reporting To

Principal Engineer or Project Engineering Manager / Nominated Engineer, depending on project complexity.

Key Accountabilities

1. Deliver mechanical engineering scope in accordance with technical specifications.
2. Lead teams through the full project lifecycle: Specification, Design, Procurement, Supply/Manufacture Liaison, Installation, Acceptance Testing.
3. Oversee commissioning and operator training in nuclear engineering projects.
4. Produce and approve deliverables throughout the project.
5. Check and approve discipline-specific engineering outputs.
6. Participate in engineering and safety reviews.
7. Ensure quality and timely delivery of documentation across all project phases.
8. Comply with safety legislation and statutory regulations.
9. Develop cost-effective technical solutions.
10. Support staff development.
11. Promote safety culture and manage safety protocols.
12. Manage contractors effectively.
13. Provide technical consultancy as needed.

Duties and Requirements

Essential

• Strong understanding of fundamental engineering principles.
• Experience in the nuclear industry (desirable but not essential if transferrable skills are demonstrated).
• Proven success in delivering mechanical engineering solutions within regulated industries.
• Knowledge of plant layout, setup, installation, and alignment of machinery for testing, installation, and commissioning.
• Understanding of safety-led design requirements and regulatory compliance.
• Familiarity with industry safety legislation and statutory regulations.
• Knowledge of modern delivery practices like BIM, RIBA/BSRIA design stages.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills; good commercial awareness.
• Experience leading design teams and managing sub-contracts.

Desirable

• Full membership of a relevant engineering institution.
• UK driving license.
• Experience in bid preparation.
• Understanding of Nuclear Industry Design Substantiation.
