Job Description:

Do you want to be a part of a Team designing the next generation of IR Sensors for Space and Defence Sectors?

At Leonardo, we are seeking a Mechanical Engineer, working in the field of Infra-Red Sensors, which are utilised by NASA, ESA and a variety of Defence Programmes.

This opportunity will require the successful candidate to work across the entire Engineering lifecycle, encompassing concept design, development model builds, Production support and beyond.

The IR Detectors Team is based at our Southampton facility but affords a mixture of on-site and remote working.

All members of the Mechanical Engineering Team are encouraged to continually develop their technical skills including (but not limited to) structural, thermal and model driven engineering aspects of Mechanical Engineering.

The Southampton team sit within the Integrated Sensing and Protection (ISP) Team which has several sites across the UK with technical and training support.

Key Responsibility Areas:

1. Compliance of Mechanical Engineering solutions through the entire Engineering Lifecycle, ensuring that the solutions consider all requirements including product quality, safety, reliability, etc.
2. Inception, research and development of mechanical solutions and techniques that enable the team to advance the next generation of IR Detectors.
3. Support Programme Team in the delivery of Product technical solutions (both analytical and practical) for all aspects related to Mechanical Engineering.
4. Generate Mechanical designs in accordance with business and industry standards.
5. Product and production tool/fixture design, including fine detail definition.
6. Mechanical design and development using 3D CAD tools.
7. Hands on involvement in practical implementation of development builds and Design of Experiments.
8. Support Procurement and Manufacturing during the introduction of new product into the Development/Production lifecycle phase.
9. Actively manage Work Package delivery elements to achieve desired Quality, Schedule and Cost.

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge:

Experience in:

• A minimum of an upper second class degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar), or:
• Experience of working within a highly regulated Engineering Industry.
• Experienced 3D CAD user (ideally PTC Creo).
• Problem solving using a structured, logical approach to investigate issues and problems in an effective manner.
• Mechanical engineering detailed design - first-hand experience of engineering design, numerical calculations, tolerance studies, etc.
• Working knowledge of BS8888 drawing standards and the application of GD&T.
• Have knowledge of various aspects of DFM/A.
• Accustomed to working within a multi-discipline Engineering Team to deliver to schedule, cost and quality targets.

Desirable:

• MEng in Mechanical Engineering.
• Experience with working in Space, Defence or Medical Sectors.
• Knowledgeable in working with vacuum assemblies.
• Hands on experience in working with optical assemblies.
• Experience in the design of Electro-mechanical products.
• Familiar in designing for harsh environments (Space, Land, Sea and Air), including EMC.
• Appreciation of Mechanical & Thermal Analysis, including ‘first pass’ analyses (PTC Creo Simulate, or similar).
• Mechanical Engineering industry trends – an awareness of new and advancing tools, techniques and technologies.
• Industrial experience in Tools and fixtures design for small, detailed requirements.
• Experience in design of vibration test fixtures.
